CB550 TACHOMETER PLUG GURUS ***MUST READ***
« on: August 25, 2015, 11:55:06 AM »
Whats going on everyone,

So i bought the joker plug that plugs into the existing tachometer cap.

I rode around for a day and come out to see that my tachometer cap cracked. Whoohoo!
What would cause this to crack?
If anyone has a replacement tachometer cap I have paypal ready.
Or
Where can i find something like this That plugs directly into head(attachment):
if theres that much pressure in there for it crack wouldn't it just push this plug right out?

And why hasn't anyone made these block off plates?

It cracked because you tightened it down too far. There is a small gap there and if you over torque it, it breaks.  You may be able to find a place that welts aluminum and they can fit it in about 5 seconds and for probably next to nothing.
That would probably be cheaper than getting a new one.

Honestly, if you have a good o ring, they will not come out, even with out a screw in there.  I would not worry about it too much.  Just stick it in there and lightly put the retaining bolt in place.

Over tightened? that really sucks i always tighten by hand.. i wouldn't mind buying a new tachometer cap because i switch between plugging it and tuning the bike.
the crack leads down into where the oring seats maybe i can get another picture. ill replace the o-ring like you said and see if it leaks again for the time being. the block off plate seems like a great idea. i wouldn't mind buying one, over a plug. The one pictured is for a yamaha. i might just buy it and see if it fits.

I cracked two on a 500/4. Second one was even after I learned not to over-tighten.

I would be interested in one of these for a 1977 550. Especially if the price is right, given the current exchange rate for the can/US dollar. Being in Canada its best just to source parts in the country! I'll be following the progress. Sick of the oil wetting the top of my motor.

Do these bolt in without pulling the tach drive?

No, These will require you to remove the tach drive an just plug right up.

Hello everyone just got word back from my friend in Canada, Cooper Custom.

Quote from Cooper:
I got some work done on your tach. Plugs this morning . I measured mine off of my 650 this weekend and I noticed that mine is actually .625" NOT  .750" like you said yours was . So I made one for you that's .750" with a 1" head on it and knurled it for easy removal . I also put a second "O" ring on there to prevent leaks and make it more secure.

I'm going to be making another style as well that will use the M6 tapped hole to secure it in place . It will be more like the "tear drop" shape that the stock cable housing looks like .
I'm going to send you both styles for you to try out and get back to me , because I can't measure your bike I had to guess but I used the ratios from my bike so it should fit.
I'm also made one in .625" for the CB650 and 750's as well if you know anyone that's interested .
I also have a some other parts I'm about to release for the HONDA CB's
-----------------------------------------

He made 2 styles .625 and .750 | Double O Ring

Can anyone confirm that the cb650 and cb550 share the same size tachometer cap?

Steve

You posted a picture of my valve cover :). That was a plug turned by Frank member 754 on here. It had a grove and is help in place by a very tight fitting o-ring. Simple.
