Removing Alternator Cover ?
« on: August 25, 2015, 06:59:37 PM »
Trying to clean up my 74 Honda CB 750 K4 by polishing up the engine side covers. Have already removed the counter shaft sprocket cover and transmission case cover. Sanded and polished them and came out pretty decent. The alternator cover is pretty tarnished and could use a good cleaning. How difficult is it to remove this cover and what all is entailed? Any Tips or Help is greatly appreciated as always !  :) :) :)

You really need a decent impact with the correct size JIS bit to avoid stripping out the screws,  Sprocket cover will need to be removed to disconnect the alternator wires.  You will also want a gasket too.  Something to scape off the old gasket material too.

Not a bad job at all.

It's oily. Be prepared to catch the spill.

And, the three bolts in the face of the cover don't need to come out right away. They hold the field coil in place, which slides off the rotor when you pull the cover off. After the cover is off, you can pull the stator and coil out.

Here's the gasket 4into1 ships quick.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vesrah-Stator-Cover-Gasket-VY-1001-Honda-CB750-1969-1978-CB750K-CB750A-CB750F-/191668934645?fits=Model%3ACB750&hash=item2ca05bd7f5&vxp=mtr

BTW - if you lean the bike over to the right side, oil will not leak out when the cover is removed.

And beer helps remove the old gasket, "use" plenty of beer!

+1 on the beer. The cheaper and colder the better!

The cover has a locating dowel or two that MIGHT make it a little more difficult. Then there is the wiring. Remove the field coil and the stator coil to get the wires outta the way.

+1 on the impact driver. While JIS bits might help I have never used them and have been successful without any issues. I use the #2/the medium SAE bit.

Went to 4into1's web-site. Are the gaskets good quality? Prices look good.

rddcw,

You will also need a Gasket for the Shifter Cover.  This cover also has Oil behind it.  Clean the mating surfaces well!
Recommended to use some gasket sealer on it as well.  Something like Hondabond.
Where the Shift lever attaches through the Cover, there is an Oil Seal that may or may not need to be replaced.
And there are 2 dowel pins behind the Shifter Cover.  Don't lose them either.

Shift Cover Gasket - part number 11395-300-306
Shift Cover Oil Seal - part number 91206-286-013

I'm just finishing up doing  the exact same thing on my 76 K6.  :)
(On page 10 of my build thread.  See link in my signature line)

Hope this helps,

Charlie

rddcw,

Thanks.
I used a drill mounted red pad from Harbor Freight.

If you use this, be careful!  It can gouge the metal very easily.
