It is incredibly spendy, but if it's the real deal NOS I suppose someone will pay the extra $400-500 for the genuine article.  I didn't see the petcock mount in the rear sump in the pictures.

It looks like the petcock bung is hidden by cardboard in the rear sump.  This looks like it very well may be the genuine article.

It is interesting how they welded it together.  They formed the bends to the bottom and then did a heavy bead weld on the bottom where it doesn't show, versus welding on the edge seam and grinding off the extra portion of the bead.  Effective and easier to quality control for leaks. For those spending $1100 on a Mead Speed, this isn't too much more for the vintage real deal.

I thought 1300 was reasonable,  so I said I would take it..
The first pic I saw, the welds were done just like the 750 tanks.

754,

Thanks for buying it, I was getting VERY tempted.  Good buy assuming it is a factory 970 tank which it certainly appears to be.  I'd be tempted to use it on a road racer that I am working on, but the though of crashing it at the track and damaging it really bothers me.

More than a rational person would spend... ::)

I blame half of this on you Brent ;)  something about having a crap ton of 3003 alloy sheet in my shop.  Talk about a perfect example to replicate.  It's in the raw, unpainted state.  I couldn't even bring myself to use the original.  It would be expensive shelf art.

Nah it's that crazy 970 that will always make it valuable, even when you're done with it.

True, I sent a PM to KOS to see if he thinks the tank is the real deal or a quality repro being passed off.  Honestly I've never seen an unpainted original 970 tank, so I would like a second opinion.  That tank would be a real challenge to replicate.  Denis's tanks like the one you have would be FAR easier to replicate in aluminum.

Well clearly I have issues... ;)

Denis makes a damn good replica CR tank.  I like the tank he and Byron built for me.

I was thinking the same thing -- that if it is a genuine 970, you could use it as a model to replicate.

I was just visiting with Denis Curtis at his shop 2 weeks ago.  His tank and chassis work is imprrssive.  But I have only seen his tank designs which are easier to construct by design.  Would you mind posting a few pics of your CMR CR replica tank?  Is the underside of yours as complicated as that "970" tank?  Brent's custom CMR tank has a one sheet flat bent bottom half as opposed to that 970 tank which has quite a few pieces stitched together along with a hand hammered or machine stamped coil pocket area.  Not exactly a bang it out type of tank...  certainly not cost effective by any standard :o

George, try reaching Vic World about the tank. For a long while he snatched up every bloody "970" part around so he would likely know too.

It's funny you mentioned Vic World, a had a nice talk with him when I took a vacation to San Francisco this spring.  We talked about road racing and all the original 970 parts he assembled to build his accurate CR750 replica.  I will send him an e-mail.

Mine is not a CR replica. It's a custom design based on a Bimota tank.

Ah.  That makes sense.  Denis mentioned that he prefers to make one piece bottom tanks with two side panels and a top skin. So 4 panels total.  That type is far more cost and time effective to produce, and minimizes the total weld amount, minimizing the potential weak spots.

The proper 970 CR tank is a veritable frankentank in comparison, especially the bottom.  I was very impressed with the tank Denis Curtis designed and made for Brent's blue rocket.  Nicely made, good welds, and very attractive considering the relative simplicity of the construction design.  Clearly he has some experience with such things.

It was a shame to have to make a fiberglass copy of it.  I'll be honest, I'd be willing to bet that if you showed Denis the photos of that 970 tank and asked him if he could replicate it, he would say yes of course.  And I fully believe that he could.  But I would be very suprised if he didn't say that he'd rather not do it.  It would probable take 2 to 3 times the man hours to make a proper 970 copy than a tank of his design.  I understand how he builds his tanks, and he has a hard enough time making a modest profit on his tanks with the hours needed to build what he builds.  I'd think that he'd have to charge twice as much or more to do an accurate 970 CR tank.

I have seen the insides of one of these. It was done for a reason. The bottom of the Honda CR tank is reflective of its internal baffling to reduce fuel weight shift when accelerating, braking, and cornering. Probably other ways to do it but that's how Honda did it.

Interesting observation kmb69 about the internal baffles.

Denis makes an extremely high quality product, and with exchange rates where they are, its is an opportune time for US customers to buy one -- or a chrome-moly boxed style swingarm -- or a Drixton replica racing frame!!

Yup, the outer shape is very much Denis's style.  Brent's CMR tank is very similar in profile and top view, but made a bit shorter overall.  Could you show me a pic of the underside of the tank?  I'm curious how he spaced it around the coil pocket area.  Flat wrap bends with one continuous sheet like Brent's tank or sectioned and welded to be more form fitting.  I'd guess flat brake bend single sheet bottom.  It makes a much stronger tank with less welds while not reducing the fuel volume too much, maybe 10%.  It is certainly not an authentic 970 CR tank copy, but it's easily a more logical approach regarding the compromise of strength/weight/cost effectiveness with making alloy tanks.  And frankly, it's arguably just as attractive as a CR tank.
