Ah. That makes sense. Denis mentioned that he prefers to make one piece bottom tanks with two side panels and a top skin. So 4 panels total. That type is far more cost and time effective to produce, and minimizes the total weld amount, minimizing the potential weak spots.
The proper 970 CR tank is a veritable frankentank in comparison, especially the bottom. I was very impressed with the tank Denis Curtis designed and made for Brent's blue rocket. Nicely made, good welds, and very attractive considering the relative simplicity of the construction design. Clearly he has some experience with such things.
It was a shame to have to make a fiberglass copy of it. I'll be honest, I'd be willing to bet that if you showed Denis the photos of that 970 tank and asked him if he could replicate it, he would say yes of course. And I fully believe that he could. But I would be very suprised if he didn't say that he'd rather not do it. It would probable take 2 to 3 times the man hours to make a proper 970 copy than a tank of his design. I understand how he builds his tanks, and he has a hard enough time making a modest profit on his tanks with the hours needed to build what he builds. I'd think that he'd have to charge twice as much or more to do an accurate 970 CR tank.
