Generator Rotor - 71 CB500
« on: October 12, 2015, 11:41:31 AM »
About to install the rotor and noticed it has a timing mark on it.  But, on this bike there is no way to see that mark with the side cover installed, and there is no means (like a woodruff key) to locate the rotor on the end of the crankshaft.

What is this timing mark doing there, is the same rotor used on some other early Honda when it can be used for timing?

Or..... is it possible that the rotor on this bike is not the original?  It fits like it should, and produces electricity.  8)

Timing mark? These don't have timing marks. Does it look like a partial drill hole? Could be for balancing. Just put it on and bolt it down.

Finally got a pic of the rotor, the mark can be seen on both photos, but the close up shows it in detail.

Does this not look like the stock rotor for this bike?

No idea what that's for. But since these rotors aren't keyed in any way then I would just put it on, drink beer and forget about it.

Yep, that mark can serve no function on this bike.  Going to put it on and forget it.  The beer to celebrate afterwards sounds like a good idea too.  8)

I'm tempted to add a timing mark to mine the next time I pull it just to mess with the next owner.  ;D ;D

Perhaps the PO was very forgetful and he put the F on there to stand for Front.  So he wouldn't potentially put it on backwards!  ::)
