Best primer for tank and covers
« on: September 13, 2015, 07:46:57 PM »
All,

I've stripped (sanded) my side covers and will work on stripping tank this week. What's the best primer to use. It will be a while before I put the paint on but didn't want to leave them bare. And I don't want to have to restrip them again later.

Thanks
Ace

We used DupliColor self-etching primer after sanding a bit to scuff it and give it something to which it could bind.
It worked well on a couple of different tanks and side panels for us.

Most primers are porous and are not going to stop rust from developing beneath the primer you apply and leave. Add moisture and some heat and you have ideal conditions for rust.
You can just apply a cheap spray paint (Wal-Mart $.96/.99 spray paint is an enamel and will cover well and protect the metal. Then when you are ready to proceed you strip it and move on.
