NR750 Oval Pistons - Pic
« on: October 24, 2006, 10:03:08 AM »
I was cruising around and came across some pics of the NR750 online.  I was always amazed at this ballsy design - just kind of threw the whole industry for a loop.  To me, it looks like Honda meant to sidestep some racing rules and give the performance of a V8 with only four cylinders.  I guess the two connecting rods were required because of side loads on the long pistons.  I wonder how this design would perform today with some form of  variable valve timing?  Seems like they could optimize those eight valves per cylinder to open sequentially and make all kinds of power all over the RPM range.

More pics of the bike, etc here:

Ring sealing was its demise. Also it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out this was not a four cylinder bike, but an eight.

Also, with chambers built like that there's absolutely no way you'll get any type of fast burn in the chamber. You'd have to run monster timing advance and incur huge pumping losses.
