Installing cylinder sleeves on a CB350F
« on: August 25, 2015, 07:14:19 PM »
I hope this is not to hard to ask but how should I proceed with placing my cylinder sleeves on my crankcase? I have the thin gasket on top of crankcase, my pistons installed to my rods, and I have new rings on the pistons. I already broke one ring set (2 rings exploded) when I thought i had my pistons in the sleeves. My pistons are 47mm in diameter and the smallest piston ring compressors i could find were 50mm. I saw some rednecks on youtube do it with 3 flat head screwdrivers but they sleeved one piston and the assembly of their engine was entirely different but i attempted it my self and broke a set of rings. Would metal hose clamps work? I don't think its possible for those to slide into the sleeves but if anyone knows of any way or knows of any tools let me know. Either that or I get 12 people with 12 screw drivers and make an insane video about it.

Lawn mower repair shops have small bore ring compressors. There was a site I saw on this forum or the CX forum that had a set of plastic smaller bore ring compressor sleeves.
I don't remember their site.

You don't need a ring compressor.  Use you fingers. No need at all

You don't need a ring compressor.  Use you fingers. No need at all, two pistons at a time

Alright i got my engine all back together. I still used a screw driver to compress the rings in the cylinders but before I had the issue of my pistons getting out of alignment. They would start to pivot while being fitted into the cylinder sleeves. My solution.. a hammer and chop stick.  Chop sticks work wonders with poking things especially if you dont want to scratch things like carbs or pistons. While sleeving the pistons and rings with the screw driver I used the chop stick and hammer to tap on the skirt of the pistons if the rings did not look like they were going in level.
