18 inch front and back wheels cb750
« on: September 05, 2015, 02:40:09 PM »
Has anyone here ever laced a 18inch rim to a 750/550 front hub? If yes, what lenght of spokes did you use? I have a stock 18inch rear rim and want to lace it up to the fronthub.

Both wheels on the Cafe Interceptor are 18".
Buchanan's did the wheel build and could sell you the required length spokes to do it yourself.
Give them a call.

Jim,
I was going to suggest the same thing but I think he wanted the specific length since he's in Germany.   :o

Thanks Don,

I hadn't noticed that detail, but I'm sure Buchanan's would tell him the required length if asked.
Maybe we could make the call to save long distance charges + the 9 hour time difference.

Lacing an 18 to a 550/750 hub (front or rear) is not a problem.  Buchanan supplied the spokes for my conversion (using Borrani's).  From Europe I would try Central Wheel in the UK. http://www.central-wheel.co.uk/

there's another way, calculate the length!

not that hard, plenty of bicycle sites have online calculators with instructions, used them a few times for racing bicycles i was putting together, the same rules apply.... before you disassemble the wheel, dont forget to count the "spoke cross" and measure rim offsets, critical for the formula.

Keep in mind that the spoke angles drilled for a factory wm3 rear drum rim will be different than the spoke hole angles   for a rim drilled for a small diameter front hub.  I have seen drum rear rims spoked to fronts before, but just letting you know that it's not the ideal, or safe depending on who you ask, way to go.  Some of the smaller Honda CB fronts used 18 wm2 rims from the factory.  I believe they all used the same front hub as well.  So if you bought a set of front spokes for a cb400f, for example, that should be exactly what you need.  Please correct me if I'm wrong guys...

I have a stock 18inch rear rim and want to lace it up to the fronthub.
Frank, if he is going to use a stock steel rear rim, I doubt he is worried about weight savings. ???

If you use 400 spokes but the hub is not identical. To 750 hub, they may not fit..
Note .....somebody with a 50 or 750 with a 18 upfront,  Please. Just get out a tape and measure the damn spoke length..

Just checked- 550 front hub with 18" rim, the spokes are 19cm, measured from centre of hub hole to face of rim.

400 spokes might work, I haven't measured any,  but you'll only get 36 in a set & you'll need 40 on a 750. I suspect they are also thinner.
