Sometimes it does take a rocket scientist.....
« on: October 28, 2006, 11:25:32 PM »
Scientists at Roll Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, and military jets, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea was to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers.

When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the
cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow.

The horrified American sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions.

Rolls Royce responded with a one-line memo:

"Defrost the chicken."

That joke has always been told the other way round. Least as long as I have been in aviation. (General Electric)

Funniest mythbusters I have seen is those two shooting chickens thru a piper lexan windshield. Which is in no way bird proof.

In response to seaweb11's comment yes they would be on a standard day....given a standard lapse rate.

Bout the only thing you can hit that high up are ants believe it or not.

Hey guys you are not quite correct...birds can fly at the level of commercial airlines that fly around 34,000 feet. Here is something I found on the bird pages:

"The highest-flying bird ever recorded was a Ruppell's griffon, a vulture with a wingspan of about 10 feet; on November 29, 1975, a Ruppell's griffon was sucked into a jet engine 37,900 feet above the Ivory Coast--more than a mile and a half higher than the summit of Mount Everest. The plane was damaged, though it landed safely.

In 1924 a yellow-billed chough, a crowlike bird that's among the highest-nesting species, followed a climbing expedition's food scraps to 26,500 feet on Everest. The avian altitude record in North America is held by a mallard, which collided with an airplane on July 9, 1963, at 21,000 feet above Elko, Nevada.

Several other bird species regularly brave extreme altitudes. Among them are whooper swans, which were once observed by a pilot at 27,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and the European continent, and bar-tailed godwits, which have been spotted at almost 20,000 feet. And then there's the occasional hardy individual that makes a high-altitude cameo.

cheers

Israel is on a migratory pathway, and the IAF has spent quite a lot of effort dealing with bird damage to fighter jets...and no, they're not flying right into whole flocks of birds!

Don't consider the chicken gun a myth - I worked at an USAF base (www.arnold.af.mil) with just such a contraption.  It was in moth-balls by the time I got there.  It was also called the "rooster booster".  The impact of high speed chickens (mil-spec, I sure) with fighter canopies was photographed with high speed cameras.  Probably a host of other data was gathered as well, all in the interest of improving canopy design and protecting pilots.

A successfull test might have been followed with stuffing a tenderized chicken in a supersonic model with barbeque sauce and cooking it in a wind tunnel, like Snotty dropping a few weiners on the warp drive.  All that is left is an ice cold Red White and Blue beer.  If you remember Snotty or "an honest beer at an honest price",  take your meds and go back to bed.

Bird strike assessment is still part of FAR 25 certification of Transport catagory Aircraft

Government regulatory organizations have reacted to the wildlife-strike problem by promoting airworthiness standards that address the ability of aircraft to safely withstand bird strikes—particularly during the critical flight phases of takeoff and climb, and approach and landing. The following list presents organizations responsible for these standards, as well as names of the regulations they enact:

United States Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)
Canada Transport Canada Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs)
Europe The Joint Aviation Authorities Joint Aviation Regulations (JARs)

Mass of Ingested Birds Number of Ingested Birds Bird Impact Requirements
3-ounces Maximum of 16 birds in rapid succession Impacts may not cause more than 25% power or thrust loss, require engine to be shut down within 5 minutes, or result in a hazardous situation
1.5 pound Maximum of 8 birds in rapid succession Impacts may not cause more than 25% power or thrust loss, require engine to be shut down within 5 minutes, or result in a hazardous situation
4 pound 1 Engine is not to catch fire, burst, or lose the capability to be shut down

I like the last one which would approximate a chicken.

Bet that was more than you wanted to know..................

do they teach pilots how to gage a birds weight at the speeds you are going, or is there a bird counter/scale in front of the engine

No we just know if we hit it or not .....

And if the engine or windshield withstands the strike and continues to function.

Really?

That is interresting,

can they get an animal psychic in to see if the birds were suicidal and what drove the birds to fly into the engines?

by learning this maybe we can deter birds from Avian Depression in the future

You go away from a post for a while and when you come back it's gone totally to the bow wows.....

For once and for all can we stop perpetuating this myth that Brits drink warm beer. It is served at cellar temperature which is just a few degrees above freezing. North American beer has to have its nuts frozen off so that the drinkers taste buds are numbed to the fact that they are actually drinking cold filtered cats piss.

There, I said it.

PS I actually like some N.American (especially Canadian) brews.
