4into1 repair
« on: September 16, 2015, 05:00:50 PM »
1975 CB550F

Here is the situation.  The part that holds & joins the 4 pipes into 1 has a 3/8 hole in it.  Is it possible to patch the hole and how?

The muffler is a Honda HMCB550F HM390.  The portion that joins the Y pipe has rusted off.  I might be better off replacing the whole exhaust system.  If I do that I would like something close to stock.  I would consider switching to a black exhaust if the price savings was significant.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply.  I decided to order a new MAC exhaust.

+1 on the finished black MAC; they're made in dog years.  Figure 1 month for the painted MAC is equal to 1 year of wear for other high finishes.  I put mine on in October, and by December I was like, "how'd that happen."

Is the low temperature paint the reason I see some systems that are wrapped.  What are the advantages of the wrapping and which ones work best?

Absolutely none other than cosmetics in a few warped minds. It will however. hold the heat in making your pipes brittle and fail far before they are intended. It will hold in moisture guaranteeing they will prematurely oxidize and rust. Header wrap is a gimmick that is rarely used by professional engine builders and yields minimal results in some automotive applications. If you ordered the black painted one, spring to have it ceramic coated and it will last longer than any other finish.

I used JB weld on a muffler hole on my cb for 4,000 miles.
I just recently ground it off and did a riveted metal patch

the bike is old and original, is runs great, no time, or need for me  to make it perfect.

only 1 patch is visible from the top anyway.
when I had JB Weld in it JB Weld showed no sign of failure.
only reason I ground away the 1 patch was because I did all the same

Keep your eyes peeled on this board and ebay for an OEM exhaust, they pop up every once in a while. The OEM header set is a beautiful design that the mac could never replicate. The mac mufflers are Ok they are quiet and probably won't last too long but they work.

I did look in classifieds and e-bay before I ordered new.  I didn't like anything that I saw.

The original muffler and pipes will be kept for future reconstruction.  I know the muffler is only about 26 years old.  It doesn't have a lot of run time on it.  It just rusted out at joint with the pipes.  The Pipes are original so they are 40 years old.

I put the MAC exhaust on the bike today.  No instructions in the box but it wasn't difficult to figure out.  I had to change the hanging bracket for the muffler from stock to the one supplied.  The OEM bracket included a bumper for the center stand.  The kit does include an L shaped bracket with one hole.  Is the L bracket supposed to replace the center stand bumper?

Thanks for the help.

I figured out how to mount the one from MAC.  I won't guess how you got the OEM mount work either.
