1978 Comstar Wheel Restoring
« on: May 18, 2019, 04:43:03 AM »
Hello everyone,

Deep into the 78' rebuild (engine, carbs, frame and electrics completed) and am now ready to attack the Comstar wheels.  Has anyone fully disassembled the Comstar wheels in order to repaint? Tires are currently installed on the rims and at the correct tire pressure.  Does a full disassembly "diddle up" original factory wheel truing.  Having struggled and fought with laced wheel re-truing in the past I am unaware of truing issues associated with an aluminum rim or could it not  even be an issue?  Will complete disassembly with tires installed have any effect or should tire pressure be reduced or tires removed before disassembly?  Plan to match mark each piece to the aluminum rim, but hesitant to begin at this stage.  Your help/info is very much appreciated! https://scrabblewordfinder.vip/ https://www.applock.ooo/ https://www.7zip.vip/

Thank you!

I've never heard of one being disassembled, but some knowledgeable people have suggested NOT to disassemble them. That being said, if I was to do it, I'd deflate the tires to make it easier to mask and paint the rims.

Having been faced with the "Comstar" rim rebuild/restore on one of my 78s', I had been advised NOT to disassemble the rim.  After heeding such good advice, I then very carefully masked the rim, lightly sanded the area I was going to repaint  and then repainted them with good results.

Complete disassembly of the rim (IMO) could possibly lead to future unwarranted alignment problems.
