Detectives needed: what does this nut go on?
« on: May 27, 2005, 07:09:10 PM »
OK-Took Bronco Bike out 2 days in a row now!  She's really getting to be dependable!

When I returned, this nut was lying in driveway, just where BB was sitting before the ride....does it belong to her?  Is it something that should be placed back onto Bronco Bike?  If so, where??

Thanks in advance!

Linda

That's a a nut with grover grooves, to avoid loosening. I don't think those bikes used those nuts, but I cannot be sure. My 750K1 doesn't that's for sure. And it seems very new, I bet it was already there.

If your car's exhaust fall off, you know where does it come from...

Check your chain tension adjusters - one on each end of the rear axle.  They have nuts on the ends to adjust rear wheel alignment and chain tension.  Two nuts - should be 10mm size.  Can you tell us what size that nut is?

OK- it appears to be one-half inch nut-sooooo that means it can't fit my bike??  Right??

Initially, I thought it was off the garage door-but we check everything and it seems like all nuts are there.  I will check it tomorrow when cars are not there, and I'll use a flashlight in darkened garage, perhaps can see what it came off from.

I am correct, that half inch could NOT come off the bike??

Amazing, I check 12mm and 14mm and thought "hmmmm could there be 13 mm size??"

And yes, it looks brand new, which makes me think it is off garage door - which was new last year.

Careful with the "rectangle" jokes...Coloradoans are VERY Touchy about that subject!

I'm from Texas, so I can pick on Colorado...I was born with the "Texas is a whole nuther place" gene!  Been in Colorado for 23 years now, and it is fine, we just need a beach!  (I've suggested that we simply flood NM-they already have the sand!! (mean, aren't I!)

And yes, I like Corn- buttered and with salt!!

Linda - who is going to find out where this nut came from!!! Tomorrow!! FOR SURE!

Check the caps that hold the front wheel on, on the bottoms of the forks. It may have been replaced with a slightly different size (but the same metric thread) if the original was previously lost. I've seen this happen before, just a thought....

I'm thinkin nuts like that were used on the muffler hangar brackets.  Each of the four mufflers would have two of those below the rear foot peg.

If that's where it came from though, I'm impressed it's so clean.  It just can't be 30 years old.  Have the pipes been replaced recently?

I agree with Jonesp, give the bike a GOOD going over, all fasteners close to the size involved. I woud not be the first time a PO replaced something with a less than genuine part, so you could still be short one nut someplace, and if it is critical...
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Check ground studs and the studs on the solenoid (sp? its early) If it belongs on your bike i would be willing to bet its where someone replaced some wiring, or added a new wire for something else (common when they run extra lights.. add that style nut ontop of another nut). I wouldnt be TOOOO concerned with it as most fasteners DONT have a tendancy to fall off while the bike is just sitting there. Go over everything you have worked on recently.

Its probably not from your bike.  Looks like a typical nut found on a bicycle fork,etc...

First off, check to see if the nut is metric. Try the nut on any exposed threads on your 550 and if it's not metric, then you can stop obsessing about Bronco Bike and just ride it.  ;)

In response to the posts about PO's possibly using a non-stock nut when working on or replacing parts, I can confidently say that nothing on this bike has been replaced, ever.

I'm not saying this to refute your ideas, I was just amazed when I was helping Linda get the bike running again.  It only has 16,000 miles and is immaculate!  Not like it had been dirty and somebody cleaned it well, this bike has NEVER been dirty!  It even still has all the factory yellow paint marks on all the adjustable nuts and bolts on the carbs, brake caliper/linkage, etc, so the shop could tell if anything had been moved.  And none of it has been touched!

It's like the Ice-man frozen in time and being revived to live again.  :)

And Linda, I wouldn't worry about that nut.  If it did come off a bike, it was probably just my beast shedding some un-needed parts while it was resting in your driveway.

Thanks!  to all- And Gordon, yes is probably fell off your bike! (hahaha)

Anyway, I'm about 99.9% sure its off our garage door, and today will take a flashlight and go over every connection to find where it goes.  We've had that garage door (the old one) snap a "spring" and garage door was a mess and couldn't get car out for 2 days!

Thanks for advice.
