500 miles in a day
« on: September 08, 2015, 08:38:30 PM »
Am I being unrealistic riding that far in a day?

I'm no Iron Butt contender, but I figure 5 hours in the saddle can't be that terrible assuming I have to stop and get gas every 200 miles or so.

Break it to me - am I just being naïve about how much pain will be involved?  My ride is my R1200GS

More like 6 to 7 hours.  I wouldn't have hesitated on my vt1100 and I could do it without batting a eye on my xvz1300 but my 750 is kinda a rough ride.  Your gs is built for this so I would say yes but give yourself time for rest stops and get some Highway pegs and a windshield my wife's grandfather said that eather a beaded seat cover on a sheep's skin seat will make your life better I wear bicycle shorts and use gold bond body powder

If youre on the freeway, youll average 55-60 for the trip once you figure in stops (gas, pee, food, etc..)
Less if it includes any city driving...

Seven times 70 = 490..average.. Ain't no time for stops on that average unless you are on the Autobahn.

I drive 610 miles to my home town on a sort of regular basis, mixing 70-75MPH interstates with 55MPH highways as well as some "city" traffic, stopping twice for pee/fuel at 20 minutes per stop, and eating while driving. It always takes 9.5-10 hours. That's in a car with cruise control , heat and AC, and I'm beat. I've done the same distance down the west coast on a bike, and it took about 20 hours.

I haven't done that on a SOHC for 30 years or so, but regularly would do 600+ a day on my Road King when I had it. Although a Road King, is, a giant road couch designed to eat miles at warp speed. Mind you though.......those are 12 hour days!! even at warp speed you will only average 60mph or so.

But with my big ugly double bucket touring seat on it and some highway pegs.......I'm good to go. Did 285 miles on Labor Day just screwin around home in the morning.

Be prettyhard to average. 70mph, unless you were at 100mph, or more most of the time..

Pretty hard to average 60MPH, from my experience, even in a car. ;)

Modesto, Ca. to Las Vegas, Nv. is 500 miles and I usually do it 8-9 hours in a car with a couple of stops.

500 miles? what will you do the rest of the day?! Why would this be a problem? EASILY obtainable. Get an early start and take your time. Arrive before dark.

500 miles can be done but, you have to be diligent about maintaining speed and keeping stops efficient.  Also, it can be impacted by traffic density for the roads you are traveling.  Unless it is a lot of open highway you may not do it without paying in pain and very long days.  Being physically fit helps you do it, if you aren't then it is going to be harder.

Alright, yeah I was a little loose in my hours/mileage interpretation :D, but I figure it's about 400 to 500 miles.  No I'm not planning on doing 100 mph average.

The good thing is that it doesn't sound like an unreasonable expectation, and since this is on Sunday I don't expect much in the way of traffic.  I'm thinking I might just drive in the next 2 days to give myself a break from the saddle.

I rode my CB750 K8 from Central Florida to Northwestern Ohio and back last summer, 3000 miles round trip. Did more than 500 miles in one day more than once over the course of about ten days.

I did 135 in a day in Baja on my cr250 then, 125 the next day, and 110 the day after, and the day after that we all did 130 miles. Each night we drank like fish.

I did 856 miles on a horrible seat going to sturgis, it took 15 hours. The stops got more frequent as the day wore on. Before returning I tore down the seat and shaved the foam to more reasonable shape and bought a Sheep skin to sit on, the trip home was better. In 4 days I rode over 2100 miles. That was the $250 gold wing I bought last winter, Minnesota and S. Dakota were 80+ mph speed limits. I kept up easy.
