Oops, I did it again...1974 CB750K
« on: September 09, 2015, 09:29:43 AM »
Well, I have a 1975 CB750F waiting in the wings to get underway, a finished 1975 CB750F, and even got my dad to buy a 1978 CB750F, but I guess it wasn't enough. A good deal on a (mostly) non-running 1974 CB750K fell into my lap and I couldn't resist. I am about 4 hours into it and don't regret my decisions for a second.  ;D

I don't know the plan yet. Originally it was to clean, fix, enjoy, and sell; then it was clean, build into something, and keep...now I don't know.

How it was "found":

Getting it home:

Clean up, where I always start:

And of course, the carb work:

Not bad.  All there, and last registered (at least from the registration sticker) in 2012.

It looks like it will clean up and run with a 3K mile service.

2002 actually, but I did get it running in about 15 minutes of fiddling...just not well :)  But it has a clean non-op registration and it is all there with few modifications, and nothing terribly irreversible. Both uncommon in this area on older CB's.

Looks like it will need some new cam tower pucks. Any info on the tail light? I've seen one like that.

You know, I had no idea what it was but after you said that, I remembered seeing one too. Then I remembered the name...which is hard to forget. Haha. Pretty sure it's the Donkey D*ck tail light: http://carpyscaferacers.com/shop/honda-cb500-cb550-cb750-parts-upgrades/sparto-tail-light/

Ahhhh OK. But yours has a hole in it for the grab bar to go through it? Also looks like its mounted higher up on the fender than stock. Are your stock pipes in good shape?

Haha! Oh man. It's official, I think this project is dubbed Donkey D*ck.

That said, and despite the new moniker, the bar doesn't actually go through. Just a bit of an optical illusion I suppose.  See below (and excuse the globs of metal polish, which now take on a whole new, gross look.)  Interestingly (or oddly), the previous owner wired this up so that the brake light and two small bullet lights come on when the brakes are applied.  He did some good work considering this was a $50 backyard find 20 years ago, but still!

Now that's something different. Not a bad idea having the turn sigs come on with the brake lamp. Are the turn sigs single or double filament?

Sorry, it's the little "bullet lights" (not sure what else to call them) on the rear fender, not the turn signals. They are just single filament so I don't think that would work  :-\

Well, I am in the middle of building a goat run so I didn't get as much work in this weekend as I would have liked, but I did get to some items. The carbs are ALMOST done, but I am running into an issue and could use some advice:

The last piece of the carburetor I have to address is replacing the Needle.  To do this of course, I need to get the old one out of the Throttle Valve, which is where I am stuck. I ran into this issue on the last set I rebuilt, but not nearly to this extent. The small set screws are completely stripped and rusted and despite soaking them in all sorts of penetrating lubricants I can't get 5 of the 8 screws loose.  Any suggestions? There isn't much room to work with down inside of the throttle valve.

And because these project threads are useless without updates, here are the carbs all cleaned and ready for final assembly (mostly done now:

And, to my surprise, the paint on this thing cleaned up very nicely after some washing, waxing, and polishing. Not sold on the color (Black Cherry Metallic) personally, but it is interesting!

A coworker needed some help on her 1973 CB350 so I have had my project mostly on the side for a bit.  Things are back underway and I have since replaced the rear brake shoes, chain, sprockets, and am continuing to polish whatever I can get my hands on.  I took off the exhaust to get the bike up on the stand and the pipe is not in great shape.  Unfortunately, on the wheel-side of the pipes there are quite a few holes and cracks.

Two questions:
• Recommendations for pipe repair? The holes look more difficult (I suppose) than the cracks/splits.
• While my polishing wheel has gotten through most of the pipe, recommendations for removing some of the really difficult rust without damaging the pipe too much?

Amazingly, most of this has come off but some of it is really stuck on there.

You can pretty well see the difference here.
