Where do you camp on the road?
« on: September 10, 2015, 08:17:04 AM »
For years I would just find spots, near the road..
This last ride I slept out twice, temps were pretty low...
I regret now not taking pics of the second Site..

 Here is Mein Kamp....
Just north of Pateros Washington

The kampf is getting up off the ground in the morning.. Ha...Ha..
Got to hang on to the front wheel to stand up, not as limber as I once was..
The bottom of the sunny spot in first pic, over the white building.... About. A mile or two up the road, you are in the big forest fire burns... They are still working on the one near Twisp... Up that road.. Huge bad fires in that area this year and the last few years..
The gas station was full of firefighters.. Busnfrom New Mexico, fire truck from Leadville. CO, army trucks full of firefighters.. Lots going on up there..

I would think that you would get dive bombed heavily by birds in the morning. I know that they were looking for a feast from your last nights dinner in that beard of yours.
I speak from experience yes I was dirty.

+1 for the tallboy lying on the ground next to the sleeping bag.

edit:  You ever get hassled by the cops for camping out like that?  Genuinely curious.

Not saying it's absolutely necessary, but, we humans do sometimes make improvements.  It's what separates us from the beasts.

When I was bicycle touring I would like the river banks if I could find them. One trip I called some friends I was going to visit and they informed me that the bridge  I was planning my route through had collapsed. (Committed to this route, backtracking  out would have added 80 miles or more.)

Luckily the last span made a ramp down to the river and in fact put me on the other side.  It was late and I just threw down and slept. It was quite  a hike  with a bicycle  a hike getting back to the road.

On similar trips I have stayed in abandoned farm houses like you pictured. Probably wasn't the most comfortable place, It was full of hay bales and made me itch.

There was an osprey aka fishhawk that was pretty vocal in the morning, had a nest nearby..
I chose that spot,  there was a 8 ft high brush pile about 10 ft from the bike,  hiding me from the road.. I hoped.. There was a house across the street,  hoped he would not call the law.
 They did not.
A little of times when you find something like this, it may be the local party spot, then it gets noisy.
This is the first time I camped through since 06.... In the seventies and eighties, I would do it sometimes most nights out of a month straight.
Got woke by the cops once in Carlsbad California., they let me stay, they asked if I had seen any people moving thru..aliens.
Most of the Western state small towns at least up north permit camping overnight in their city parks.
If you sneak into state parks late at night and they find you you will, likely get roasted and asked to leave....or get woke up by sprinklers..
I got to say it does feel a lot different. Thanks a few decades. Back when I was younger, and things were different..
If you travel the same route again you just use the same spots again.
Some bars let you crash out at the edge of the parking lot, or will tell you of a good spot..

I done lot of camping like that in Czech Republic, nobody ever bothered, even the police would just check my ID and leave me alone.

With my wife riding through Germany, we spent night next to a field and 200 yards from a farmhouse, I walked to the farmhouse to ask for water and tell the lady we will be gone in the morning, she had no problem with it.

Ha, in the morning, there were two slugs inside my wife's helmet.  So I told her - about 10 years later  ;D ;D ;D

Too old to sleep on the ground, did a lot of that once. Now:

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

I feel like a total wuss, 754's sleeping on the dirt out in the open, I got reservations at the Comfort Inn.  I tried tent camping since hurting my back - I couldn't get back up without assistance.

Joke of the day:
What's the first thing you do when pulling into your campsite for the night?
1)  Set up your tent
2)  Pop open a beer
3)  Pick your bike back up.   ::)
