Side Cover Painting
« on: September 10, 2015, 04:04:11 PM »
All,

Can anyone with original 1977 side covers tell me if the inside (bowl side) of the covers are painted like the outside?  I have a set of covers that came with my bike. I've been trying to use them to determine my original bike covers.  Yes assuming they are the ones that came with the bike originally.  I have a 77 CB550F.  When I bought the bike 25+ years ago, it had just been repainted to the CB550K brown. The side covers were primer on the bowl side. minus the brown finger prints.

Due to the deep scratches and chips I started sanding them smooth.  Under the brown and primer was a black layer which would match this site's description for the year and make.  Under that was a metallic blue.  I'm guessing Candy Sword Blue.  But under that is metallic red.  Again, I'm guessing Candy Presto red.   So I didn't know which color it was "at birth".  I assume red given it's the layer above the white plastic.   However, when I sanded the inside just to see what it had, under the primer gray was blue and blue only.

I'm hoping some answers will help me determine which color I'm going with.

Thanks
Ace

The side covers are originally only painted on the outside and around the corner a little on the bowl side so the inside gets a lot of overspray on it but isn't given a duco, it is just left bare with a thin overspray coat from painting the sides and edges. The originally white plastic fades to a dirty yellow color over time.
It sounds like your sidecovers were originally candy presto red, John
