I dig it - IMO the wheel itself needs the ribs on the 'spokes' sanded to tie the two together.  Any chance a 750 plate could be made to work w/550 w/o significant effort?

It had shoes on it when I got it, measured could see no difference, so it fit on.I did not check shoe diameter, and the brake does not feel that strong...probably. Same shoes.
 Those backing plates come in black, which I then sanded to he high points, and silver.
I am thinking of drilling and filing some slots on the silver one I have.

I don't know,  got it with a parts buy, tried it and it fits.
Pretty sure black comstars with drum. Used them..

Looks like 79-82, maybe some Automatics.
The Nighthawk. , don't use that one..
Gobs on ebay, some under 20 bux.

Not a direct fit, and not sure how much machining that would require for fitment.

My rear Lester on my 550 was advertised as a 750 wheel, but ended up requiring a 750 backing plate to make fit up.

I was thinking about that, shoes have less width in 500.
The pivot posts may need cutting down and drilling, and I suspect the inside part that goes against bearing would need cutting back on a lathe..about 5 or 6 mm
 I know an easy way to do it but you need a lathe.
 Maybe could be done on a drillpress with an endmill, but requires a fair amount of skill.

Thanks a bunch Frank! I'll check with Billy first, he has yet another box piling up for me. But its good to know there's tons on ebay for cheap. Really cool idea! I'm thinking black PC with chrome like polish for my K3 ;D

Hey Frank,

     Do you still have this set up? I found a 79 rear panel for dirt cheap on ebay and mocked it up. It doesn't seem to seat fully flush like the stocker. Is there any gap between the hub and the panel on yours? I have a feeling they shipped me the wrong year  >:(

I just checked mine and it does appear like that too....
And I noticed that the back brake seemed to suck when i put it on, and i wondered why.

 So i measured a spare ribbed plate, the center part measure 1.7 in, or 43 mm..not sure if the one I mounted is the same.. And there is a steel insert on the shoe side.. Maybe it should be cut down to get it to fit further in.?  Sounds like I may have screwed up and given bad info..

Question, if you have shoes on the plate, put some masking tape on the shoe, mount with axle thru center, and turn while lightly moving the brake arm..that should score the masking tape and show if part of the shoe is not contacting.. Maybe my braking was reduced due to not full contact, and riding on the ridge at the raised edge of the cast iron brake surface.

Its cool Frank, I'd still like to figure this out and make it work if you have the time. I'll do the masking tape test tomorrow. I confirmed that the part number for the shoes is the same as the early Ks. If I'm looking at it right, I THINK that the entire brake pad surface area is making contact, but there is about a 3-4mm gap after that. There is a nice groove on the inside of the plate that can possibly seat a large o-ring style gasket, maybe seal it up that way? I guess ultimately, is there any potential danger to consider with this set up?

You know how a brake shoe usually leaves a ridge on either side... I suspect my shoes are riding on that, tilm it cuts a groove in shoe, I wont get good braking.
 Wilm look into it further later on... Meanwhile sorry for not checking everything..
 Need to figure how thick the steel insert is , dont want to cut all of it out or get it too thin.
 If you get a line on the tape it will tell how far it has to move..

Frank, PLEASE don't apologize, its a great idea and there is time to work it out  ;) It cost me all of $11 and some shipping, totally worth finding out ;D

I did the masking tape test, the shoes have plenty of meat on them and it looks like it does make full contact across the surface area. I took it apart to take some side by side pix, what do you think? The posts are same height, but the cams are clearly different.

The only worry I have is continual riding in pouring rain, but be careful washing if you have pressure.
 If it passes the rain test, I am not worried.
