Do you have mud daubers where you live?  Does not hurt to protect from them too.

not mine engine, but experienced the same:

Engine didn't come with the Carbies  :'( , and the Oil was either drained out or leaked out due too a broken oil filter bolt... Which I will have to deal with to be able to store with oil..
Should I also spray a light coat of WD over the exterior ???

I don't know if spraying the exterior of the motor with WD40 will provide any benefit, since the exterior cases are aluminum, and you will end up with a very slippery heavy engine to handle.  I would not hurt to spray the exhaust and intake ports with some type of anti-corrosive before you plug them up.  If you are storing the motor for an appreciable amount of time, replace the wadded up shop towels with something to seal the ports from the outside elements -- even painter's tape -- so that you do not have a direct opening to the outside.

Put it in a tightly closed contractor trash bag (heavy plastic) and include some silica gel packs (available from Uline etc), attempt to not have any holes in the bag (rather a challenge). If it's in a guaranteed rodent free area you can use a sock filled with dry rice to absorb humidity, but that will be of great interest to mice, squirrels, etc.

I used shrink wrap on the F engine.  Seals well and it is cheap and my shop is not open to the elements, but say open to bugs and temp changes.

If I had a garage, I would porbably just oiled it up and left in dry spot protected from dust.
