CB750K2 should these sprockets be replaced with the chain?
« on: September 15, 2015, 09:29:34 AM »
My chain has some unstraightenable kinks in it, which internet research indicates is bad, and is slated for replacement. Are these sprockets good enough for some more miles or should they go too? I think they look okay but I would love to hear your feedback.

Right now it's got a 50VA chain from DID. Will a 530 chain fit on the sprockets? DID and Diamond seem to be the preferred brands. Anything else I need to know?

How often do for guys lubricated your chains? I've been following the manual and applying Motul chain lube every 500 miles.

If that were my bike, I would for sure replace chain and sprockets as a set. From the pictures, they seem to be worn unevenly. Replacing just the chain, it will most likely wear faster.  As far as cleaning/luring, I also do the maintenance around 500 miles.

On my build, the sprockets were ok, not new, but in decent shape.  I bought a cheap DID chain - not o/x ring, just plain new 530 chain and used it.  After it wears out, I will get o-ring and a set of new sprockets.

There are so many chains to choose from and searches just bring up more choices I was not aware of.

The plain DID roller chains seem very affordable.

Plain chains are ok but require extremely diligent maintenance, that when done offers some advantages over o/x ring chains (like lighter weight, smaller section width, and less rolling resistance)   If you are the type that can even sometimes be negligent with chain maintenance, get an o/x ring chain.

and yeah...that sprocket will eat up your new chain fast which will in turn eat up the sprocket even more, which will eat up your chain even more...see the false economy here of not replacing that sprocket?

What do you consider extremely diligent maintenance? I currently lube it every 500 miles. I never skip any.

If you can afford it, spring for new sprockets too.  As far as maint intervals, it all depends on your riding. A daily rider thats ridden in the rain will need more lube than a fair weather rider.

RK, DID, Tsubaki, EK and Diamond all make good chains, check the tensile strength, any above 6000 will be good.

A tip to help that new chain last a [much] longer time: all of the present sprocket offerings out there today have gritty faces in their teeth, most having been cast-to-size instead of machined, as they used to be in 'the old days', to fit. So...run your old chain on new sprockets for about 100-200 miles until the old rollers have a chance to grind off this grit and jam the OLD links, instead of on your new chain. It is then a 5-minute process to unhook the old one, hook the new one on, pull it through and clip it on (followed by readjusting the chain slack!). Then you can throw away the old chain, knowing you got all that it could give you.

If you can afford it change the chain and sprockets at the same time. My preference is an O or X ring chain. As far as as one of these chains robbing power it is negligible on a street bike. If you were an expert level MX rider on a 2 stroke, yea, it might matter.

If my sprockets are worn then they will be replaced. Is Sunstar the brand of choice? Are others good? Better? Any ones to avoid?

I didn't realize there were so many good chains out there. I can get RK locally and several more with free shipping in Canada but sprockets are going to have to be ordered from south of the border.

I've thought about changing the sprockets a bit, so I can do wheelies (having never done one before) but I'm not sure if that's a good idea; I might like it too much.

yea, I would call every 500 miles extremely diligent.  Thing is though, make sure you are getting your standard chain really CLEAN before lubing it...best process I have found for standard chain is soak in solvent of choice (gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, old carb dip, whatever), scrub, rinse, dry it out, grease with high temp bearing grease, roast the grease with propane torch so that it melts into the pins and rollers, wipe off excess and its ready to go...but personally, I can't do this every 500 miles, so I use o/x ring chain...

to get a 750 to do wheelies with just a sprocket swap you will have to run some crazy custom sprockets and you will barely be able to go 70 mph, plus a 750 is still a big heavy monster with all the weight up high and to the front.  I like 16/17 tooth front 48 rear for the acceleration, but you still gotta dump the clutch in first at about 7500 rpm to get the front wheel off the ground just a little bit with a stock/lightly hopped up motor.  If you really want to do wheelies, I recommend Buell XB9/12.  They are pretty cheap right now, and you will have trouble NOT doing wheelies.
If it works good, it looks good...

If you really want to do wheelies, I recommend a Yamaha RD350 or Kawasaki Triple!

Fixed it for ya, Sean.

I'll just keep my stock sprocket sizes and keep my eyes open for a Kawasaki.

I pulled the Tsubaki Omega chain off Dorothy and it measures 63" and 63.5" - less than one percent after 24 000 miles or so.

I lubed it about once or twice per thousand miles.

Clever motorcycles have chain covers and chains last much, much longer

But I am the first to admit the cool factor is not there  ;D

I replace chains all the time on used sprockets. If the sprockets are not worn excessively just replace the chain. A good way to measure the rear sprocket condition  is to install the new chain on the bike and try to pull the chain aft center off the rear of the big sprocket. Usually the front is worn more than the rear however you can compare tooth wear profile. http://www.reginachain.it/eng/use_and_maintenance/how_to04.shtml

My experience is the chain need to be lubed direct after driving in heavy rain and wet roads
