Free CL350
« on: December 16, 2006, 02:09:42 PM »
A friend of mine is giving me a cl350, just wants it gone. But this thing is rough, really rough. I don't know what I'll do with it yet, I guess I'll decide after I get the motor unstuck and running. I had a cb350g when I was a kid, it was a great bike so I'm looking forward to this project. I'm going to pick it up Monday or Tuesday, I'll add a couple of pics to this thread. One question- are a cb and cl the same mechanically, as far as cams, carbs, etc.?

My CB175 has A LOT of interchangable parts with the CL175, but I don't know about all of the 'guts'.  I'm pretty sure the carbs are slightly different though.  What I do is open up two parts fich windows & compare stuff --> http://www.crotchrocket.com/fiche_select.asp?vcc=Motorcycles&mfg=Honda&year=1970
Actually runs --> 1975 CB550-K1

The engines should be basically the same, besides the exhaust of course.  I believe the CL has a slightly different cam grind though.  Gearing is different as well.

Check this "Other bikes" forum, there is a lot of info about the CB and CL. Seaweb restored one and kept records and pictures of everything.

Went to pick it up today. It's just too far gone. Damn. It's not even worth dragging home and parting out. And I've done a rough one before, my 350f. Hate to say it, but this one truly belongs in the scrap heap.

    Jay B,

I feel for you. If you're like me, you hate to see a bike wasted. That is a real shame.

How do one gets out of the situation, when you get there expecting to find a free bike and find just a piece of crap a suppoused friend either a) want somebody to get rid of it or b) thinks it's really worth something. I mean, how do you get out there without telling your suppoused friend what a piece of crap without hurting?

Raul- He knew it was in pretty bad shape. I told him I appreciated the offer, but I was honest and told him it was worthless. No hard feelings, but I'll probably buy him a couple beers anyway sometime, just for offering.

Would it have been possible to have used any parts from it, if you are looking to build a 350
anyway? Or were you going to do a 350 because of the circumstances only? Just wondering
cause I'm bad about picking up on things that most people would not have given a second
thought. LOL on what ever you have in mind.

Bill, I've really been wanting to do a 450 but I haven't came up with one yet. I thought what the heck, maybe I'll do a 350 instead. But this one is truly junk. Every movable part was froze, brakes locked up, corrosion everywhere, etc...... I could see nothing but frustration looming ahead... :o

Jay, That's a shame about the 350. I sure hate to see a bike get in that kind of shape. I wish
you could find a 450 to work on. I've always thought the 450s were a decent bike and now, in the
last few weeks, interest seems to have picked up on them. Have you done any looking over on
cb450dohc.com? You take care and I wish you LOL finding a decent "Project 450".

Hey Bill, As luck would have it I came across a 500T this afternoon. Good condition with 9300 miles. Didn't hear it run, it was only about 30* out but the motor had real good compression, judging by kicking it through. $500, I think I'm going to buy it.

          All Right Jay B,

Here's hoping things work out for you. You are probably aware that it's basically a
450 with a longer stroke which gives you a wider range of parts that will work on it. I'm not
questioning your knowledge of that model, I just think it's be great if it works out for you,
because, there's always a fair variety of 450 parts and some 500 parts on ebay and, sometimes,
for not too bad of a price. I'm curious to see some pictures, if you get it. LOL
