Larry McBrides engine grenades at Atco
« on: September 17, 2015, 07:33:51 AM »
The results
Dave Vantine's bike was recently at Stetson's shop for several weeks while his engine was being rebuilt. Rick was doing some chassis work. I had never seen one of these bikes with no engine before. Meticulous attention to detail. 16 sensors etc. That MSD mag puts out 44 amps and is remotely driven .....very cool stuff.
Even my youngest son was impressed and he doesn't know anything about bikes.  ;D

Good God Almighty! That block is unreal!!! You have to admire the "Stones" that Drag Racers have (all of them) to mount or pilot machines with that much potential for power/destruction. I know I never could do it. Would have been very interesting to witness the full disassembly of that bike after it cooled down and returned.

A real blessing he was not injured.

The APE studs are still bolted through the block and into the top of the broken case!
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Sure looks like it. The top section of his frame unbolts out of there for engine access but you can sure see jagged edges there.
Maybe the weld broke at the front coupling. The first picture is best I got of his front section at Bradenton, 2014, I think.
The second picture is not Larry's bike but has a similar coupling arrangement at the rear. Kind of like the Gordon Frame Kits.

Lots of horsepower - metal fatigue. Wonder how many runs he had on that set of rods and cases?

Don't know for sure, but I bet he replaces ALL engine parts plus chassis and body repair/paint.
Lots of custom billet, 1 of stuff there: cases, crank, cylinder, head, supercharger, drives, etc.
Just estimating - $75,000 plus  :-\ :'(
And that may be too low! Ouch!

Hell, I hope he already has another motor in the works to even make Valdosta.
That ain't exactly the kind of stuff you can just run down and pick up from O'Reilly's.

He was on and off the throttle trying to put on a show for the paying fans. He had already crossed the line and closed the throttle when it hydrauliced broke a lot of stuff, but the APE wrist pins survived. Larry called me just to tell me that.

The new bike is almost track ready and will be in Valdosta.

They actually travel with 7 of the Puma motors total. They went through one each day in Rockingham and Chuck mentioned they have been able to use one motor for a a whole weekend before.

I did just read an article last night saying how Mcbrides burns are worse then originally thought and hes likely to miss the rest of the season, including Valdosta  :-\

He will have a series of skin grafting sessions to help make a full recovery
