WOW!!!

I went out tonight on the first group ride with the bike, put 50km on it through the mean streets of Melbourne.

It was a little hard to start on the slipping starter clutch gear wheel but after a few attempts I got it going. After the first five minute idle it started at the touch of the button each time the rest of the day. It is idling a little high, I tried adjusting it on the run but the adjuster screw is loose (worn spring?) I will look at that tomorrow.

But - damn this thing pulls! You slip from first to second and then find that sweet spot in the throttle and let it rip, it has such rapid acceleration, and such a growl from those pipes - I love it.

So a replacement used low mileage starter clutch gear wheel is on order, easy swap out. Apart from that all I need to do now is an oil change in 50km and then keep riding!

Cheers mate - some of those Brunswick back streets are a bit mean, particularly at night.

Update time:

300 miles in and the engine is great, I have done one oil change, adjusted the cam chain tensioner and tappets and got most of it just right.

The only thing to fail on me so far is the speedo - I need to track down the cause but I think it is the drive unit on the front hub. Hopefully it is not the brand new little gauge, 'cos if it is - that means doing a lot of re-wiring.

Next task is to wash it after the weekends blast before benching it to fix the speedo - those Gippsland country roads get a lot of mud on them from the local farm tractors, which ends up all over a bike on a wet weekend.

Looking good Cliff, make sure you drop your oil filter and replace it ASAP, there'll be lots of swarf floating in your oil from the new pistons and rings etc, that could do lot of damage if you leave it. Cheers, Terry.

Yep - did that at 90km, there was a bit of swarf on the magnetic sump plug, a few bits of small crud on the filter and a light sheen in the oil - but nothing major that I could see. Pain in the butt getting that filter off as you need to take the 4 into 1 pipes off to get to it.

Yep, that's why I mentioned it Cliff, some folks might decide not to change the filter as regularly as they should because they have to remove the pipe to do so, but when you're running in a new engine, it's critical. Good thing with that old Yoshi is it doesn't weigh much.

Hi Tom,

The seat is comfortable and has enough padding, I can sit well back into it and get a good riding position, it is just a bit wide for me I reckon, if it tapered in more at the tank end I would be happier.

I just read from start to finish.  Great job.  I am only just beginning to recondition my 750 K3.  Much for me to learn from you and so many others.

Still loving this bike and riding it regularly.

But the other day I had the set up whilst starting it and I noticed a spark jumping from the frame to the battery tray as I hold the starter button down to start the bike.

Do I have a bad earth and should I be running an extra earth wire from the frame to the battery tray?

Sounds like a good idea Cliff, I always run an earth from the frame to the negative terminal on the battery, and another one from the top of the engine case to the negative terminal, and one from the coil mounting bolts to the negative terminal. Cheers, Terry.

Would your oil filter come off if you trim the fins ? Sucks to have to pull pipes , but goid time to clean them.
