CB500 charging system
« on: September 27, 2015, 08:19:52 AM »
The issue: Battery voltage drops at idle but charges when revved up (my tach is not working properly yet)
I found specs in the Clymer manual that has a table and the alt output is supposed to be:
6.5 amps @ 1000 rpm
0  amps  @ 2000 rpm
2.4 amps @ 3000 rpm
And slowly declining. I find it odd that it's 0 at all but included the chart

I have a 71 CB500 with an engine that's slightly newer. I was told most of the wiring had been replaced and gone through. So I last bought a battery on 6/15/13 and the battery doesn't seem to be suspect.
What I have found so far is that the rectifier seems to test fine and within specs but wiring color is from a CB350 according to the lack of a Y/W wire but having a G wire in its place

(NOW HERE IS WHERE I NEED THE MOST HELP)
The stator tests at 7 ohms instead of the 4.6-5.0 ohms. It says replace if it's "much different" but what is that? Lol
The field coil tests at 1.0-1.2 ohms on the three yellow wires but specs are .35 amps +- 10%
Is this enough to create my low/no charge issue at idle?
Also I have some burntish wires specifically on one of the yellow field coil wires.

It seems there are some upgrades for the charging system but everything seems so confusing. My basic wiring knowledge is decent but these old components are throwing me off esp the rectifier. Thanks ahead!
