I put over 100 miles on the bike today and over 160 total since changing the brass. I've only checked mileage once, but I got 39.3 mpg. It took 2.2 gallons to fill up and I never got to reserve.

The bike is running great. Starts easily, idles well (although I have noticed that the idle is ~100-200 RPM higher sometimes when it's in gear and the clutch lever is pulled in....idles at ~1100 RPM in neutral), and pulls well in any gear.

I'll pull a plug or two soon, out of curiosity.

Thanks for the update! Updates help us guys still troubleshooting tremendously! Nothing I hate more than reading pages upon pages of a thread, then get to the end with no resolution. Time to enjoy the ride!

Another 120+ miles today and, other than a broken tach cable, it's performing flawlessly. And I got 41 MPG on the next fill up, too!

Now....off to the parts pile to find a tach cable....

I'm working through a similar problem with mine...I believe I've read this thread at least four times.  :)

Glad you got yours running right and it helps me know there's light at the end of the tunnel!

Some of those old jets look absolutely terrible to me.

Hope to have my new brass installed today. I'll post a pic of my trashed emulsion tube.

Cheers

I'm glad it could help. The bike is a joy to ride and it's easy to get 38-42 MPG without even TRYING to get maximum mileage. I just ride it however I feel like.

those 550s don't get very good gas mileage do they? I'd be hard pressed to get my 750 go that low.

I've read that in a lot of places though.

HondaMan's thread, I believe he wrote it, on improving the gas mileage of the 550 to 50-60mpg is somewhere on the forums.... I am guessing that a good search would find it.

Edit> I think Scott is running a modified motor,  isn't he? I believe that performance increases are at the expense of fuel economy.
A bike still beats the efficiency of my car by a good margin.

This motor is stock, other than a Pamco and the UNI filter in the stock air box. I'very never gotten great mileage from these middleweights. Probably  ~42-46 with my old CB500 was the best I've ever gotten. High 30's to mid 40's is good for a 550, in my experience.
