71 CB500 Cam Chain Tensioner Installation
« on: September 22, 2015, 01:23:28 PM »
Did a search but didn't find this - So, followed this page out of the Honda manual:

I'm assuming that mounting the tensioner onto the cylinder block and tightening the nut puts the bottom of the tensioner in the correct position to go in it's "slot" in the crankcase when you lower the cylinder down that last inch or so to the case.  Is that correct?

It went together fine, as per the Honda manual.  Just been reading about problems when the bottom of the tensioner doesn't go into it's slot, making me paranoid!

Thanks.

Finally pulled the oil pan off to have a look.  It appears that if you follow the exact procedure in the manual the lower end of the tensioner does go right into it's slot.  Or, I just got lucky.  ;)

Man this ruined my afternoon...Is it possible to reposition it thru the underside, or tear it all back down if its wrong?
I have a bad feeling about this on a 550. tensioner felt defferent going together....S%#t!

DH, I'm certainly not the expert on these bikes, as this is the first one I've ever built.  But, I suspect that the head will have to come off to reposition the tensioner - if it's not in the slot.  Pull your oil pan and have a look, took all of 30 minutes to do this one.

Screwed the pooch as luck would have it >:(, but glad I read this thread. I'm used to the 750, and never read the numerous threads concerning this. Thanks guys. Next time I  will use the factory manual instead of a Clymers.

That really ought to be the stickiest sticky At the top of this website:

USE ONLY The  FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.
