Three rides, three close calls
« on: September 28, 2015, 01:50:44 PM »
In all my time of riding I have never had a stretch like this. I'm a daytime, lights on, sensible, ARC rider. The cagers I have missed have shown a total disregard for right-of-way. In each case I was a half second away from disaster and had time to brake and swerve. Good thing for me I was paying attention.

1) 5 minutes after I got a nice pic for "Let's see your bike....", I'm leaving AA on Barton Drive at Whitmore Lake. Sharp curve just ahead, speed limit 25. A small car coming the other way, blasting down Whitmore Lake, fully crosses centerline at the apex into my lane. I hit the brakes and went on the shoulder as he went by.....

2) a weeknight afternoon ride eastbound on Hines, speed limit 40. A white Escape at Jughandle road, young lady driving, blows stop sign and turns left in front of me into my lane. I Brake, swerve right, horn. Escape driver does not respond to liberal use of horn.

3) returning from my Saturday ride, closer to home, on Six Mile, a guy in an older Ford, I can see him wheeling through the grocery store parking lot, totally blows stop sign and turns into my lane. Brake, Swerve to left this time, horn, Ford driver does not respond to horn....

 I'm not used to it, three times in a week.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I had a lady in a mini van merge in to my lane and then yell at me for scaring her kids because I only had forward as a clear rout with a driver behind me so I dropped a gear and ran like hell to get ahead of her.  Aperently my exhaust was to loud

Last week I was on the sandcast, a chick flew up to a stop sign on my right, standing her minivan on it's front bumper. I braked hard not knowing if she was going to get it stopped. The car in the center lane next to me did nothing to avoid. Both were young ladies on their phones.
It appears you are riding defensively, I hope you have better luck with the cagers in the future.

Close only counts in Horse shoes and hand grenades.      And nuclear warfare, close counts too!
Be happy they were only close.
Sounds like you are aware of your surroundings and you are watching out for the idiots.
That is what it takes to stay alive out there.
Good job. Keep it up!

Yeah, but you know, sometimes those dumbass cagers need to be taught a lesson.  Otherwise, they're bound to repeat their behavior.  Having a come to Jesus meeting with them will make them think twice about doing anything when there's a motorcycle around...

Motorcycle riding is a zero defect proposition, and even then a rider needs a certain amount of respect from other motorists.

I'm just feeling somewhat mortal after this, and in light of Digger's ...... "accident".

I was riding extra cautious last Friday because of this.

Anymore I ride like I'm a ghost on the road, headlights always on along with dual filament run/blink yellow lens directionals on the front, and run/blink/brake red lens directionals on the back. My SOHC is not quiet, but not obnoxiously loud so that you need ear plugs either. I got more respect when on a full dress touring bike, but they are pretty big and easier to see than the SOHC. 3 in a week kinda sucks though.
