Yes they call them Hornets here.  Detuned Fireblade engine. Naked styling.

One thing I wondered is why does Honda de-tune the naked bikes?  What if people want a CBR1000 (and the performance thereof), but without any kind of fairing?

Why would anyone want 160-odd bhp with no fairing and high bars?

Don't see too many Hornets around here.

Suzuki have just about cleaned up with the Bandit 600 and 1200 (now 650 and 1250)

Hell of a bike, my friend at work has one and man does it scream. At least compared to my 750.  The throttle on it is a little daunting coming from a bike with carbs, the front wheel likes to jump up a bit if you aren't paying attention!

I rode one when I was looking for a new bike this last summer.

As far as being 'detuned', it sacrifices the serious top end power but it has more low end grunt... It's more of a daily driver than the CBR, more comfortable and easier to handle.  It loves to have fun and doesnt hesitate to lift the front wheel with a flick of the wrist.

If you want the performance of the CBR without the fairings, buy a CBR and take off the fairings.
You cant expect a bike with an $8,400 sticker price to perform as well as the $11,299 CBR1000RR.

I only drive in good weather and I love to go really fast so the CBR was definitely the bike for me but I would definitely recommend trying the 919 to anyone thats looking

I heard that it had a lot of low end power which is good for me as most of the streets here are rather busy and not too many open straight aways.

Been eyeing one for awhile but the sticker price of the new ones was scaring me away since the suzukis are much cheaper.

unforntuatley in the states we only get the SV650/1000 and none of the really cool things.

I liked the 599 but the fact that i read a review putting it head to head against an sv650 and that it scored low in everything and was so much more made me forget about it:)

The old fella I ride with just got a hornet. He loves it. It sure looks cool.....I took it for a short spin. I dont particularly like the high bars either. Basically a DOHC cb for modern times eh?

They look like really nice bikes, the only problem with the Hornet is the price. A bit high for what you get...

The 919 would probably be my choice too, money being no object.  I look at it as the modern version of my 750 and the ergonomics are nearly the same.

From what i read about the 919 is that it is actually an upgraded version of the Fireblade engine. If i recall right the name Fireblade was only used from 93-97 when the bike became the CBR929 then later the CBR954 and finally the CBR1000RR. If it is infact based off of the original Fireblade engine...i see myself looking towards getting one later on.

The 919 was written up in the September Motorcyclist magazine, in the Smart Money (used bikes) page:

"a solid capable performer, reliable as an anvil, 103hp, understressed/defanged CBR900RR engine, 11.18s/120.7mph 1/4 mile, flaccid suspension (2002/2003) - improved 2004, gearbox is a gem, 485 lbs - lighter and more agile than most of its peers, watch for worn out broke rotors on hi-milers, no changes/upgrades except paint in 05 or 06, value $3545 - 2002, $4100 - 2004, $4400 - $2005"

"Also Smart: Kaw Z1000 $5710 2003, Suzi Bandit 1200 $4720 2003, Yam FZ1 $5775 2003"

A student of mine, a  few years back, bought a 919 as her first 'serious' motorcycle, while she was in training. Being a novice she asked if I would put a few miles on it to start the break-in process. Cor! What a nice bike: great handling (for my capability), excellent brakes, nice ergonomics, and plenty of power.

From my perspective any more power would be a total waste. As others have noted there is no real benefit to being able to go 100+mph on a naked motorcycle.

I was impressed, especially since at the time I was comparing it with my VFR800.
