Good insurance companies?
« on: October 04, 2015, 05:14:57 PM »
Need to change insurance companies. Looking for an insurance company that will write an agreed value policy for a classic bike. Unlimited mileage, unlimited commute to work, unlimited use. Realistically I put a bit over 2000 miles on my bike last year but hope to increase that in the future. Heavily dependent on weather and my mood though.

Have looked at Foremost which has good reviews from motorcyclists who have made claims, but they won't do an agreed value policy. They are the specialty branch of Farmers, who has given me a  favorable quote for my trucks and cars. They offer a comparable price to my current insurance, with greater liability and underinsured/uninsured, but lack of agreed value concerns me (i.e. they may say my $10k bike is worth $2k, so FU).

Let me know your experience with various insurance companies, particularly if making a claim. Really want an agreed value policy to cover the bike but don't want to be limited in how I use it.

I used progressive and was able to do an agreed value. I ride it a lot. Rates are very reasonable.

I think Hagerty is best for old bikes. I now have Progressive because I get a multi-bike discount but they did give me an agreed upon value for the CB750.

I checked on a couple of Insurance companies today to get Insurance on my 750.
Criteria were;
   a. Must have an agreed value.
   b. Must be a 12 month policy (if the weather is nice I might just want to ride in the winter).
   c.  Must cover all installed accessories (e.g. Fairing, Saddle Bags, Custom Seat, etc.)

So I first checked with NJM that has my other insurance.  They actually have a "partner" company that writes their Motorcycle Policies.  They were actually pretty good with everything except the Agreed Value.  Price was good for here in NJ.

Looked briefly at GEICO.  Didn't see anything about agreed value so did not pursue.

Dairyland doesn't write policies in NJ.

Hagerty had everything I wanted. (Thanks tlbranth)  Plus a number of things I hadn't thought about like towing.  Only catch was that it takes a couple of days to approve and you need to send a couple of pictures.  Price was reasonable.

So I am now waiting on approval before I can go register my 750.  Hopefully in a day or 2 that will happen.

Surprised to hear that about Dairyland. Wonder what they have against "Joysey"?

Guess Joysey (the insurance commission) made them an offer they couldn't understand.  :)  :)

What are thoughts of Dairyland, Johnie? Believe they are based in WI.

Thanks Charlie for the info about NJM, I was going to call them about the bike but that answers that. I will still call them to see what they offer for the trucks/car.

I went through the process with Hagerty a year or two ago but shied away as they limit riding to work to 20 times per year. Depending on weather and my mood I may be over or under that, though they mentioned possibly being more flexible in the future. Looks like I was under that limit this past year though between weather, cold, and needing the truck for something else any given sunny day. Their main concern seemed to be the bike sitting outside unattended all day. I explained the bike parking at work is right next to the building and I can see the bike looking out my window I also offered to park inside and send a picture of the inside parking area, as that is an option too. No love, 20 times a year to work hard limit at that time at least. I may go with Hagerty regardless when I get my restored K1 restored again, as I intend to have a lesser bike for commuting... Another CB or considering a cheap dual sport that'll get dropped anyhow and I wouldn't care about agreed value or even full coverage. Gotta wait until I can work a kick start before that's an option.

Progressive is not an option for me, considering my ongoing experience with a claim. I would like to avoid giving them another penny of my money unless they have a change of heart and make me financially whole from their at fault insured hitting me instead of lowballing me and diminishing my financial losses and medical issues. The agreed value part of the policy is more or less legitimate (though any claim on a restored or even very nice condition CB750 will be a total loss), but you best not be hurt or miss any work.

cadunkle,

For the Cars and the house, you cant beat NJM here in NJ.  They send you a check every year as a dividend!  It's usually enough to just about pay for the MC insurance.  LOL

Progressive is not an outfit I would ever deal with from what I've learned about it's founder/owner.  Consequently, they never appear on my radar. :)
Hope that you get a good resolution.

If you're considering Hagerty's, make sure you check about the mileage.

I know with my classic Mercedes convertible, I checked into Hagerty's but they wanted to limit the number of miles I could drive it per year.

Hagerty never said anything to me about mileage. But with these in a collection I only do about 700 per year on each one.

My friend insures his Harley through nationwide.  Between them and Aflac he was well taken care of after he had to lay it down to avoid rear ending a driver who failed to yield at a hwy intersection.

I talked to them about my 550 and they would cover it at whatever value I am willing to pay for.  Money talks.

I am with State Farm, $12 a month with 5000 miles a year, but we have everything - house, life, cars with State Farm and out in the country nobody will steal a motorcycle.

Best bet is to check with insurance broker and let him/ her run numbers for you in your area; once we moved out of suburbs our vehicle insurance dropped a lot.

Here's a bump for Haggerty - and a friend on another board just had to call in for roadside assistance with them and said the service was excellent.
