Greenspun archives
« on: April 03, 2005, 12:39:06 PM »
I put the postings from the Greenspun technical forum online at http://glennstauffer.com/smf

Bob Wessner has been helping me re-organize the 60,000+ postings that had been made to the greenspun forums in the past 4 1/2 years.  There's a lot of good stuff there.

I encourage everyone to visit often.  If you have questions of a technical nature regarding these bikes, try a search on the greenspun archives first.  Your answer might be there waiting for you.

We'll eventually migrate all of these posts into a super-FAQ on SOHC/4 bikes which will also include all of the good stuff that gets posted here.

Glenn,
There is something that has been bothering me since day one on this club site. There are no "real" Tech Archives with much useful knowledge available to "newbees" (and some of us OLDBEES)
We get thousands of repeated questions on the same topic like "what year is my bike?" or "How do I remove the valve cover on my CB750?" or "My bike revs fine but won't idle"
These tie-up a lot of bandwidth and are very simple to answer: CLEAN THE CARBS, pull ther motor, ect!!! Many members get pissed and give snooty reponses to these day-by-day questions. That alone, leads me to belive that there may be a better way?
It would be nice if there was a static database for links to data or onsite answers to such simple questions. Something like a FAQ would seem lame but some of these questions and responding threads might be sorted by a small panel of "experts" from the Tech Forum to ensure that they are indeed correct and contain a fair amount of info. Then post them on a special page.
Although this might lead to more stored data (I'm not to good on these digital machines) It would cut down on some of the daily questions like "I started the Ole Gal but she won't Idle"
Sound like a good idea? DUH, I think so :-)/
Thanx,
WAYNE (CHUNG)
PS.. where are the files/pages from the RICKMAN CR assy/parts manual that I sent you??? I can't find them.

OOPS, I should have actually read what you posted. BUT I AGREE and will help in any way I can although I have a very slow landline. Where are those RICKMAN pages? The originals are for sale including some MRD stuff that I didn't share because of limited time to scan and transfer.

As a newbee to hondas I like whatyou folks are doing and the willingness I have found to offer help. One fo the most useful things I have found on a site like this wasa searchable archive of postings. I don't know how much roomyou have or that would take. Here is a link http://www.bowsite.com/bowsite/tf/lw/threadsx2.cfm

It took me about two years to see and hear about every topic on longbows that I could. Now I can go to the archives and type in key words or search by author. I had not been to that forum for about a year and when I did I saw the same questions as I saw last time. It is very nice to have a resource like that that I can point folks to when they want to know anything about long bows.

So far, all of the tech questions that I have had about my bike were very easily answered on this excellent forum. There is a vast amount of knowledge for the asking. Even at the greenspun archive you see the same topics listed as you go down the list. Now, one of the first things I do is search an archive for the specific Info that I am looking for If I can't find it I post a question, usually about where I can find the Info. If that doesn't work I usually get an answer anyway form a kind soul that has had the same trouble and has found the answer already.

The Rickman pages got mislaid during all the recent site updates.  I found them today and will get them online shortly.  I always appreciate the contributions to the site, just don't always have the time to get them online as promptly as I should.

On the archives... The Greenspun archives are online on another forum for now and are searchable.  I'll have to add a posting to the top of the technical forum that refers people to the FAQ and to the Greenspun archives.  I wanted to bring the Greenspun archives into these forums, but I was leary of doings so since  I had to write my own import script to get the messages into these forums and I wasn't sure it would work.

I definitely agree with what's been said, and i'd just like to mention that i've been doing quite a bit of programming and database work over the last few years.  I'd be more than happy to repay some of the help i've received on this site with a little site maintanance, db programming or setup, or importing of the greenspun archives to the new system.  It would be very nice to have all of this information on one site (especially considering how much really good info is on that greenspun site).

The software company i work for has been doing customer support software for quite a while now and one of the most helpful things to our customers is getting people to browse and search through an FAQ section on the website BEFORE contacting a person about their problems.  I think you all are right, getting an FAQ up and running would probably cut down tremendously on day to day traffic on the forums.

So, i guess let me know if there's something i can do to help with the site comptuer wise...

Well boys, the FAQ has been up & running for a few days now  ;) - anyone who has something they think should be in the FAQ should send it to me and I will slot it in. Remember, a FAQ is only as good as the stuff that gets put in it!
