Next door neighbor wants to lease one of my bikes - Thoughts?
« on: October 06, 2015, 08:32:37 PM »
I don't know that I've ever been presented with this, but I only have 2 bikes - a 360 and a 550 (If you have one old bike, you'd better have two, one as a back-up) - but my next door neighbor has expressed an interest in "leasing" my Maxine, the 360.

He has a MC license, I know his mother and his wife, but I can't help but think this is not wise.  For starters, he's not willing to buy it outright, and nor is it for sale.  However, these bikes are meant to be ridden and I can only ride one at a time - I prefer the 550 for my daily commute. So this leaves a bike I adore, Maxine, sitting under a cover all day sometimes for a week or two at a stretch.

I keep telling him I need to do some more work, for safety's sake (and some of that's true) especially for a newb who doesn't know classic bikes.  He is going to buy (allegedly) one of the repro Triumphs - and they're cool, I'll admit that - and basically, I think, wants my bike for practice.

He's willing to pay, and the insurance isn't too much of an issue - unless he gets killed on it, which is a huge problem - just wondering . . .

Anyone been posed with this before?  And, if so, what do you recommend?  My initial reaction is to say no - cuz a bike is not like "hey, can I borrow your car?"  It's much more interactive and, as such, much more dangerous.

The only way it can work.. You sell it to him with a buyback price.. If it's undamaged.
It likely won't return it undamaged. So you won't have to buy it back.
Give him a price YOU can live with..
Explain. To him he is better off damaging this one than a new one...

He should get a 250 NightHawk to learn on or possibly drop or wreck. New riders are dime a dozen with stars in their eyes until they lay it down and have a come to Jesus moment where it gets real. The first year for a regular rider is going to be a weed out time for a lot of riders. My little sister bought a Nightwark 250 and she quit riding after taking a spill on gravel in a corner at modest speed. It got real for her then.

You would not forgive yourself for seeing your prized 360 thrashed or trashed. It means too much.

Only way anyone rides my bike is if they are a long time rider and they are still riding. Even then.
Still, if I were selling a biken the test ride only happens after they have given me the agreed price. They bring it back in one piece unabused, then they can decide if they want it or not. No joyriders.

Gene I let my 2 sons ride my bikes some, but that's it. If your initial reaction was to say no than stick with that. I learned at a young age that letting friends borrow a bike is a bad idea. Back 40 plus years ago I had just bought a brand new 1974 CB360. I let my best friend borrow it one weekend and he didn't bring it back the way he got it. He fixed it but the bike to me was never quite the same. I sold it a short time after this.

No way. The only time I let a friend ride is when I am on another bike and we ride together. I usually let them take my K4 which has not had paint yet. Plus, I can keep an eye on them to know they are not abusing the bike. Letting your neighbor take it by himself is a good way to become enemies with that neighbor. Something always happens...

I know that ever time I let somebody who I know borrow my trailer, it gets returned with a broken tail light lens or a bent mudguard or a broken some bloody thing and it's all a big mystery when the question is asked about it.

I'll help anyone out if I can, but if they want to borrow my trailer, they can get fcuked.  ;D

If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

It is a sure way to loose a friend when you lend them something you value high.

I would not do it, not worth it.

Yep. If you think you want to part with it to help him out this is the way to go. Otherwise recommend some local bikes on CL for him to look at.

CL.  Help him find a cheap bike to practice on.  Riding and wrenching.
If you worked out any deal to get him on one of your bikes, and something happened, you might need a higher fence  ::)

^^^This is my major concern.

Thank you all, helpful as always - I'm sticking with "no".  I can't, in good conscience, let him ride that bike, and it's not for sale. It's not dangerous inasmuch as all bikes are dangerous to a degree, and I like my 360.  I'll help him find a cheapy learning bike and teach him some wrenching instead. Besides, if he did get hurt his Mother would kill me.

Seriously, thanks - just needed a sounding board on this.
