quick welding question / stainless / non-stainless
« on: October 15, 2015, 08:05:30 AM »
Can you tack steel to stainless steel ?

Building a coffin gravity racer and I have a piece of stainless tubing that I'd like to run a steel bolt through and then tack it so it stays put.

What happens when you try to weld stainless to regular steel ?     I'm using a Hobart 220 mig with shielding gas.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I guess i should add, that the welding wire I have in the machine is for normal steel.

Normally, I'd just try it and see what happens, but the parts are painted and if it doesn't/will not work, I'd rather leave things alone so I don'e have to patch up the paint work.

A friend patched a hole in my muffler with a piece of thin stainless and I think he used regular wire.

Anyone think it would it be possible to patch an exhaust with some stainless sheet, using an Arc/stick welder and small  stainless rods?
Or would it more than likely to blow holes even with 1.6mm or 2 mm electrodes?

Yep, you can MIG stainless to mild, or mild to stainless using plain wire, no problemo. Same/same for stainless wire. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Arc welding is really better suited for welding thicker material mate, but you can probably weld anything if you're patient enough. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I will just throw it in here, there is a gassless SS wire for MIG now:

I am sure welding under gas is better, but it is good to have an option.

I would use inert gas, and avoid being near a fan.  I bet it can be done, though.
