Yeah idk they iinitial told me it would soak for two days and then i just kept calling them and they would delay and delay. they ended up soaking it for two weeks seemed odd to me to.

Sadly, sounds kind of typical for the motorcycle service industry (independent). I see the dents in the sides in the pictures, did you do bodywork to remove them? If so, how?

On the one hand I think it's kind of good etiquette to not just flat out accuse them off the bat, but if you had everything tested and fitted before and you got it back from them and it doesn't fit, then it seems quite clear that they did something to it. Is this a radiator type shop which probably does this sort of tank repair a lot? If so, that would at least mean they would pressure test it. Normally of course they would never test it at a PSI that would do that to the tank, but if they had the wrong pressure that at least makes sense.

I was also thinking that since you had an acid (vinegar) in the tank, is it possible that you gave it to them with the lid closed (or they closed it) and then it sat for two weeks and produced gas inside to the point of expanding?

I have done acid treatments and even after rinsing several times, it can still react to putting in gasoline or fresh baking soda water. In other words, they probably got the tank closed, let it sit for 2 weeks (as is), told you it was "soaking" in dawn while it was really just sitting there.

If you didn't pull out the dents yet, do they look different than they did before? (pressure on the inside might change their size)

Seems like you need to speak to these guys and get some answers. Unfortunately, if they did anything stupid they probably won't admit to it.

They told me that they line a lot of tanks and do it for all the old motorcycles around town. The dents in the tank haven't changed sense I bought the bike. Maybe they left the lid on for a week and let the gas expand it even though they told me it was soaking. I don't want to blame them and even if it is there fault I have no proof and I'm pretty much screwed on this tank as I feel if I bend it back to fit the inner liner will crack.

The liner should have some degree of flexibility. I have tried with some success to squeeze a tank in for the same fitting problems. I used a rachet tie down strap wrapped around the tank, pulled it up tight and held for a few minutes then realease and do it again. Did this a few times and definitely made a difference, can't remember how much but no extra dints in tank. Just be careful.

Everyones responses just don't make sense. If they pressure tested it with too much air wouldn't the inside bulge closing the gap under the tank? The insides have sucked in, if it was pressurized so that it expanded then the outside dimension of the tank would be wider also, but you say it isn't.

Nothing really makes sense about this case, we're just positing some kind of hypotheses. As far as liners go, they are different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Kreem doesn't become rock hard like a caswell epoxy coating.

Could of been gas fumes too. Sealed up tank left in the heat for a couple weeks.

Again this would have blown it up making the gap underneath tighter not wider by an inch.

Really depends on the construction of the tank and how weak or strong the metal is in certain spots. I'm not advanced in metallurgy or metal work but it sounds plausible to me.

Yeah idk this is really a low blow as the bike is running now. I'm gonna see if the place is open tomorrow and go talk to them. If there is nothing they can't do then I will try ratcheting it. I do have a receipt though that says if the inner liner separates from the tank within 12 months they fix or give me my money back.

Your not the only 2 that thought that as well. I had 2 cb750 tanks that where different measurements underneath and someone suggested there may of been a change somewhere with production.

This tank has some pretty unique characteristics, not to mention some very identifiable dents. No way it's a different tank with the exact same paint and exact same dents.

As far as I can see, there is no doubt that that tank has had pressure put in it - I think most likely intentionally as the fuel cap is vented so it can't hold pressure in! This is normally done to pop out the large dents - sometimes it works, other times the sides simply splay out like wings - I have seen a few of these - definately caused by compressed air pressure!

They always get wider with air, and it does not take much.. Like 25 psi or less.. Very easy to spring a tank... To push the tunnel down, probably more...
Don't care how many tanks you have done, the air thing on, these tanks you only got to do once to find out what happens..
And yes cap should always vent..

I agree; I've not only seen it before, I was the one responsible! I was helping my sister's boyfriend pop a dent out of his almost new Elsinore 250 tank, using the air-hose at the neighborhood gas station, when the tank suddenly splayed out. It was so wide the rubber biscuits had an inch of clearance on each side!! We managed to squeeze it back with straps enough to barely engage the rubbers. I felt bad about suggesting the fix when it happened, but after the guy treated my sister badly, I lost any feelings of guilt.

I wouldnt call them, I would take the bike and tank to them and politely ask WTF?! And to fix it or replace.

Well I can't take the bike there I got no trailer and it's a pain to put in the bed of the truck. And the tires are dry roted. I'm gonna just talk to them first and see what they say.

You don't have to take the whole bike there, just the tank. The pictures you can bring on your phone.

just and update i called the place and they were interested in seeing the tank of course. I took the tank to them this morning and they could clearly see it had expanded. I was polite and did not excuse them at all. They just ask what the tank needed to be bent back to and that they would fix it. Seems as if this is something that has happened with them before. They were very nice and told me to give them a call later today for an update.
