CB 550F Adventure Bike

    I have decided rather than do a full restore, cafe racer, or rat.  I want to modify my 1975 550F into a long distance Adventure Bike.  In this effort I will be do some of the same mods done in the 80's before manufactures started producing touring bikes.  I purchased the bike in the late 80's.  The bike came with a fairing, luggage rack and mid size sissy bar with back rest. 

    I stopped riding the bike about 1993 and it sat for over 20 years.  This summer I pulled the bike out of the raspberries in June and spent until September getting it running and back on the road.  New seat cover, electronic ignition, new coils and lots of work on the carburetors.  The tank was in bad shape in 1993 and I tried doing a tank liner.  By time I got back to working on the bike, the tank finished rusting out.  I spent the summer and fall looking for a different tank.  I ordered a 5 gallon touring tank and mounted it on the luggage rack.  At the moment it is my only functioning gas tank.  I did find a replacement tank on e-bay finally.  This will give me about 9 gallons of fuel.

    When I first had the bike I would ride in the hills of Kentucky.  One of the roads had a ford on a small creek.  Though it is a street bike the 550 handled the crossing easily.  When I moved to Michigan, I started riding the bike on those scary gravel roads.  This fall I have been riding the bike on more gravel.  I am not planning on running the bike in sand dunes but I do know you can run it in loose sand if needed. 

     The fairing needs to be replaced.  It is cracked and the replacement windshield is too short.  It's style is close to a batwing with the addition of running/turn signal lights.  I like that it protects the hands. 

     I have purchased a crash bar.  It was an old stock item.  I need to lengthen  the lower mounting brackets to clear the exhaust.

     Another mod I want to add is saddle bags.  I do not want them to stick out any farther than the handle bars.

Hi MD, I'm looking forward to reading more. Will you use the stock pipes or go for something offering more ground clearance? Will you add some off-roading capabilities such as tires and guards? I've got a new handlebar riser and dash system for vintage and dirt coming out very soon - perhaps we could work out some advertising photos discounts for you.

By the way, I've owned 2 CB500 Fours - both 1972 models. I love those bikes.

Gordon,

The stock exhaust gave decent ground clearance.  Problem is that it had rusted at the collector and the connecting collar on the muffler.  I replaced it with a black MAC4to1.  These pipes do seem to be lower.  I'll have to be conscious of big rocks.  Living in the north woods there are plenty of forest service roads to explore.  The gravel and hard packed two tracks are what I want to drive over.  I have no interest in trying to drive though mud wallows created by ATVs, 4x4s, or moose. 

If all goes well tomorrow I will be dropping the bike off to get new tires & tubes installed.  After I get it back home I'll post some pictures.

It has been a while.  The bike now has new 70/30 tires and a new chain.  I decided to have a shop put these on.  I did not count on it taking from late October to December.  The day I drove it home was above freezing when I started riding but as I went through some higher elevations I hit black ice.  30mph never felt so fast as that ride.  Here is what the bike looks like now.

Just found this thread and great idea! I have tried to do something similar with my CB750 - I changed the 3.5 gallon tank to a 5 gallon tank (200+ mile range) and have used 80/20 tires to ride dirt and grave roads. The CB750 does remarkably well on fire roads and hard packed dirt. On more graded roads it would have issues. I am getting a bracket made for pelican cases or soft bags and a rack for the back. I did have a basic rack before with a pelican top box that worked great.

Gordon - great video on the bar risers - I like the adjustable nature of them for siting down/standing up. Will see if they will work with my current setup on my XR650L.

Is the tank on the rear of the seat an additional gas can?  Or a keg? 
Just saying...because a keg would probably make for a much more interesting evening if you're camping on a cross-country ride.

better take a grinder and round the Sharp egdes at the vind screen....before you cut a arm or somthing more importment¨¨  off your body..2 minuts spend well...

Looks like it might be a Wixom fairing

A couple days of warm weather encouraged me to start working on the bike.  First step start the bike.  The bike turned over well in the 30+ degree weather but did not fire.  I stopped before totally killing the battery.  I was working on something else and thought I forgot to turn the gas off.  Went out to the trailer and found the gas shut off.   :-[ No gas no wonder the bike didn't start.  Turn the gas on, check the choke, use the kick start to save the battery.  Several kicks later bark and a few more the bike was running for the second time since December.  I let it run at 3000 rpms until the exhaust no longer was fogging and a little longer to recharge the battery.

The front brake is sticking.  I freed it up last year by loosening the caliper and moving the piston with the brake level and tightening the caliper.  I am going to get a rebuild kit.

UPS brought several OEM parts today.  The first project was to replace the chain adjuster.  The old ones were frozen.  I had broken one of bolts 20 years ago.  A shop replaced the chain last fall but did not replace the broken adjuster.  With the adjusters fully engaged the chain still has 2" of play.  Time to order the next new tool and master links.

Sheeeet. That's bringing sexy back! I worked on a friend's 650 about a year before deciding to buy my project and it had one of those. That thing was crazy to ride. Even when it rained I could tuck in and stay dry.

I think this is a great idea MD. I love my 500/550 but living up here where the air is so thin I don't think it would be very practical but I hope to find out this summer. I'm in.

It's funny how certain design styles come and go. I remember thinking how cool a Vetter fairing looked when I was a kid.  Now, it makes me think of Purple Rain. 

I always liked the smaller bikini fairing of the GPz bikes, too -- and still do.

I have changed my mind on the fairing.  I ordered front turn signal post that were removed when the fairing went on.  I am looking at putting a slipstream windshield on instead.
