Topic: measuring floats on the bike?

I searched and read posts on the forum about measuring float height. Looks like the proper measurement is done with the carbs off the bike?  I had read a post that said if the floats shut off the gas to the bowls then they were probably ok. So it tried this and measured the height that the float was at when it shut off the gas and it was about the proper height (22mm for my 76 550F). Would this measurement work?

Will it work?     Yes

Will it be as accurate as setting them with the carbs off the bike?     Probably not
