'74 CB750 Clutch Slipping
« on: October 12, 2015, 10:52:20 AM »
Hello All,

After going on a 200 mile ride Saturday, I started my bike to putz around town on Sunday and noticed that the clutch was slipping pretty badly (2nd-5th under medium throttle). The bike has always had too high of a clutch engagement point for my liking, so I loosened up the cable Friday before the ride to try and alleviate it. That made it a little better, and I don't recall the clutch slipping at all on the ride on Saturday. I'm thinking it might be the discs that need replacing, and I'm just trying to get a sanity check on it. Would it make sense, given the above diagnostics, that the clutch discs are worn out?

Also, if the discs are worn out, where should I go to get a replacement? I found a set online for around 60 dollars, which isn't a horrible price.

Thanks.

Often oil related. If you use car oil it can slip when this kind of oils have antifriction agents. Use Motorcycle oil for wet clutch. 20W-50

Thanks, But I definitely used motorcycle oil. IIRC I had to buy like 4 quarts of the stuff, I wasn't happy with how expensive it was haha.

Lets see, you adjusted the cable on Fri and then noticed it slipping after that.  You sure you adjusted it right? How old is the cable??
Dont understand what you mean by "engaging too high"???

Clutch lever should have about 13mm play.

Sorry, I noticed the slipping before. The clutch felt good the entire day I rode it Saturday, it felt better after I adjusted it. From Sunday (after it had sat overnight) I noticed it was slipping. The only thing I can think of is that it glazed over, or the ride just took the rest of its life away. It was the longest ride I've taken on that motorcycle. I'm going to try to readjust the clutch but if that doesn't solve it I think it means the discs need replaced. I was asking this forum to get some advice to see if there was anything else I should do first and where to source replacement clutch discs. Sorry if my original post wasn't clear enough.

And thanks for the responses!

Cheers

And as for "engaging too high," the best way to describe it is that it felt like the clutch was catching late in the stroke of the clutch lever, as in it was as if the clutch lever was 3/4 of the ways out before starting to engage, where on other hondas I've owned and rode it starts 1/2 way out or something like that. Does that make more sense?

Yes, sounds like a stretched cable.

No all motorcycles oils are equal, do you remember what brand/weight?

IIRC I purchased 2 quarts of valvoline 10W-40 and 2 quarts of another brand, also 10w-40. both were conventional non-syn motorcycle specific oils.

I didn't think about a stretched cable, I think that could be very believable. I'll look into that.
