Well it was pretty nice today and I was seeing what was up with the carbs, so I pulled them off and removed the boot clamps...........they popped right on. The Chinese replacement clamps are to wide where the screws are at. So I ground down the carb side of the clamp a few mm's and they went on as there designed.

It now runs, starts, and idles as it should......lesson.....use Honda parts when available   ::)

Sooooo, I couldn't just let it sit there. I dropped her off the center stand, backed her out of the driveway, fired her up and took her around the neighborhood. I'm having a linkage issue with the carbs not wanting to go back to idle without twisting the throttle closed. I will address that when I change the #4 carb body.

All in all.....it runs pretty good, now I need to get tires and rebuild the front forks.

Got the grandkids coming for a long weekend, so it will sit till next week. All the rest of the parts should be in by then and I might have the scratch for new tires too.

But Mayble is lookin better.

Today I rebuilt the front forks, I swear there was twice the oil in them than they required, and it was the rankest smelling stuff I've ever smelt. New tire, tube, and rim strip installed and I was working on the headlight ears and front blinkers and just ran out of go. Will work on some more tomorrow.

Its mostly done for now, redid the front end, one of the stock headlight wings I got was badly bent either initially or during shipping so I changed them back to the ones that were on it when I got it.  Tires are done and balanced, the tire shop said that they didn't have a spoke weight that fit my front wheel spokes so they put a strip weight on it.....FUGLY, so I will have to see what I can find to fix that. Did a little painting just for looks the white I had doesn't match the tank (its more like ivory) but it really doesn't matter cause I have to fix the dent I put in it and repaint it anyhow.

I found a good #4 carb body for cheap so tomorrow I will pull the carbs off and replace it and see if I can find out whats causing the return glitch too.

Hell........I might even go for a decent ride tomorrow!!   ;)

I had a similar issue with the wheel weights. When I dropped it off I spoke to the owner and said I wanted spoke weights.  He said no worries and mentioned the glue for stick on ones is a pain to get off. Went to pick it up and I was happy just to get the wheel back, got home and noticed the stick on weight, they are ugly on a chrome spoke wheel. Then I noticed the tyre was fitted for the wrong rotation and I did tell them when I dropped it off. I got it sorted ok but it seemed the messages were not getting through from the owner to his staff.

Replaced the #4 carb body today and reset the floats to 14mm. I found my linkage glitch, the fast idle for the choke was bent and hitting the linkage just at idle. Then I put it all back together and took her out for a drive!!  ;D

I can say she has a few issues;

1.  It took a bit to get the rear brake adjusted since it was dragging a bit, I don't remember needing that much foot to get the rear brake to work, but I can get it to lockup if I so choose so I guess I just haven't had a drum rear brake in so long I don't remember.

2.  I haven't done a valve adjust, or for that matter any adjustments to the engine and there is a little bit of rattles that I hope will adjust out. I know I know I should have done this BEFORE the test drive......but I got so pumped about it running good that I had to.   :P

3.  The is a strange bounce in the front, almost like an unbalanced tire. I cant tell you at what speed it happens cause the speedometer quit working shortly after starting the test run. But I did get up to 5,000 revs in 5th and it was rock solid.

Other than those things it appears to be a runner/driver now. I will do the engine adjustments in the next few days and do an oil change along with new filters.  I'M VERY HAPPY WITH THE OUTCOME and would like to thank all who offered advice and inspiration during that past few weeks. I still have to do blinkers and a few little things but she is done for now.

Sounds good. Like you say, hopefully those sounds in the engine are gone after some general tune up measures. Let us know how that goes.

Adjusted valves at .003 int and exh as per Hondaman, cam chain done, points looked good, timed and fast idle adjusted at 3000rpm at full choke. Still need to put a meter on the carbs and adjust the clutch, but she fires instantly from dead cold with 1 twist and full choke. After she warms up she has the SOHC sewing machine "chuggle", she is a little noisy but I have no idea how many miles are on her. My next expense will be a new oil pump just to be safe.

Sweet. Just planning minor improvements from here on out? Still thinking about paint?

Not going to do much for the "riding season" I've ordered a new LED flasher relay and aftermarket signal lights that are a 3 wire setup, since I'm converting to all LED's. That way they will be running lights and blinkers....the more visible the better. Have the parts coming in for the speedo fix too.

As for paint........I'm undecided right now. Torn between bright white (it looks pretty good white) and brilliant blue or "Grabber" blue (my favorite color), but I need to fix the dent in the tank first. I may just fix the tank and rattle-can it the same color as the headlight and side covers for now. For the future of Mayble.........that "vision" from the 70's is still rollin around in my head, but we will see what the future brings.  If there are any big changes in her future I will start a new project thread since this one is pretty much at its end.   8)

Today I got the used speedo drive in and installed it, while doing this I did a check of the front tire and it appears to be ever so slightly egg shaped. I will give it a little bit (since there is only around 30 miles on it) before I get it exchanged. Then took her out for a little ride. It was 96* out so I kept the ride short and did mainly a varied check-out ride. Buzzed around town so that I got up to operating temp with in town stop and go on surface streets stuff. Did a few full throttle runs on the open roads and it will redline at will without issue. Hit the highway onramp and let it sing....entered the highway at almost 100mph and settled into an 80mph cruise speed that seemed to agree with her. Very solid at that speed with no weird noises or vibrations. The trans whines a bit on deceleration but isn't overly loud. On the way home I kicked the crap out of a Yamaha Bolt from a stop light.....at the next light  I got a, "What is that?" he had never seen a SOHC and had a hard time believing that it was a 1978 and was very interested in information about them. We BS'd for 15 minutes at the gas station and I brought her home.

My front end "bounce" wasn't as pronounced this time, but it happens around 45-55mph (now that I have a speedo) then seems to go away. She runs pretty good, good throttle response at all RPM's without flat spots. I need to sync the carbs and do some fine tuning, change the oil......it is new but I have no idea what's in it now. I need to get directionals installed, there on there way, and find a chain guard for a decent price or just make one. Then ride the crap out of it!! ;D ;D ;D

Got my new blinkers yesterday....I was going to go stock, but that's just not me and the stock ones that I have acquired require to much work to bring back! So I found these on ebay for cheap and figured what the heck. They are 3 wire dual filament with 25-8047 bulbs at 8w and 23w, these bulbs are hell to find local and are not available in LED.  :(  Either way I have them and they don't look to bad and I need blinkers. So in the spirit of waste nothing and re-use/re-purpose I came up with this for the rear mount.

This is one of the handlebars that was on the bike when I got it and it just so happens to be the exact size of the light base.   :)   It's been cut down and drilled for the wire exit and will be mounted above the lic plate.

These will be running/blinkers front and back and the rears will also be brake/blinkers cause the more lights the more they might see you!  ;)

Well....I may not be done just yet. I have been throwing around the dual disc idea for the front so as to have better brakes. It looks like it will be cheaper and easier to convert to a GL1000 fork assembly. I have been looking and I think I can get a complete parts bike for $200.00, pull the front end off it and part out the rest to re-coup some $$$$.

Wow, for 200! That'd be awesome. Will be looking out for your updates on this. I'm considering doing the same thing over winter.

Today I addressed the "bounce" that I've been trying to find and I think we found it. Took the tire back off today and took it to the shop. They put it on the balance machine and there was a definite up and down wobble to it. The guy proceeded to let the air out of the tire and worked it for awhile, then aired it back up and reseated it on the rim. Back on the balance machine and it ran nice and true. Its 98* and muggy here, I put the tire back on but will wait till its a little cooler to test ride.

That was it......all is good now with no bounce. Went out for a 50 mile ride this afternoon, it was brutally hot and muggy here but what the hell, and I had a blast. I will admit that the old SOHC is a crude beast by todays standards and requires that you pay a bit more attention. It is neither smooth or refined, but brings a HUGE smile while riding it. It took me back to 1978 when I had a new one, the sound of the sewing machine under you while cruising at Highway speeds is awesome. One thing has changed since then though, everyone drives ALOT faster now, I remember doing 70 back then and pretty much passing most people. Now at 70 you are the slow one its a good thing I prefer back roads to the super slab cause anything above 70......the mirrors are useless and it sounds.....hurried.....to me, but that might just be my perceptions right now. I think the more that I ride her the less I will notice that part as I know these engines can spin high R's without issue.

Re: My 78 750K Build......An Almost Stocker, Starting Phase II
« Reply #73 on: October 12, 2015, 04:50:46 PM »
So I found a set of 11.5" rear shocks for her and got them mounted up. Went out for a ride today with them and other than having them set to soft they performed great and with the little increase in trail it seems more stable at higher speeds. I think I need to go to different fork oil, I used ATF cause the book said I could and I had some. So I think I will try some 10wt fork oil to see if the forks are a bit more compliant.

The next thing on the agenda is storage! I'm not really into the "Squidy" look with a backpack so I have been looking for a decent, affordable, and secure way to carry stuff. There are things that I have learned to have with me all the time when I ride, so that I can do pretty much whatever I want in most conditions. The contents change with the seasons. Its not unusual to go from 80/90 degrees to the mid or lower 40's in the same day around here since I'm so close to the mountains and love to ride in them.

I am by no means "done" with Mayble.......still gathering parts.

I got spoiled by saddlebags on my Harleys, so I have decided that's the direction I'm going. I went to my local Army/Navy store today and look at ammo cans. I REALLY liked the room in the 40 cal boxes, but they were just to large for the bike. So I settled on the "fat" 50 cal ammo cans they seemed to fit the bike better although they are kinda small. I will mount them on removable mounting brackets to the passenger peg, fender, and shock mounts. The brackets will stay on the bags so when removed there is no mods to the bike. It will be pretty easy to add a key lock to them for traveling and between those and some bungees to secure things to the back seat I should be able to carry most everything I need on my long distance rides and adventures.
