Some bikes have the pedal like on the '80s C70 Passport with a toe and heel shift pad on the shifter arm. It takes some getting used to but, it is a handy design as long as your ankle has the range of motion needed. I rode my C70 after an Achilles tendon repair and didn't have full range of motion so I had to tuck the toe/foot under like most bikes.

Had a friend in Sierra Vista who rode a cruiser and she was a tiny lady. She was bundled up for a cold weather tribute ride for a biker who had been killed in an accident and to raise money. She ended up getting a double puncture of the rear tire causing rapid deflation in a 50 mph zone. The rear of the bike immediately began gyrating and she managed to keep it upright until it had slowed to around 30 before it tossed her to the road. Helmet had a huge scar across the visor up to the top of hemet then another that was on the back opposite that scar. She got rolled out pretty rough but no broken bones, headache and some muscle strains.
It took her several months before she was ready and had gotten over the trama of the accident to ride again.

I skidded down the road with my wife from something like 50mph, it took me a year plus to get over it mentally.

We were scared pretty bad on knees and elbows, ground my Korkoran boot tip half way through, burned my ass cheek too. It is the heat that gets you before you start draggin your skin touches the black top.

Ever camped in small A frame tent when you can't get on your knees and elbows?

Two-wheeled organ donors right there...

I always encourage them to ride near the hospital so they can facilitate the harvesting of said organs in a timely fashion

I have a friend that went down a year ago, and she still can't ride her bike with the same confidence she had before. The accident was not her fault (car pulled out of an underground lot and crossed 2 lanes from zero visibility) and she had nowhere to go. She was wearing the right gear and was only banged up and bruised, but it really shook her up.

A pet one of mine, and I have harped on about this many a time on these hallowed forums. But to trump it, this Summer I saw a gentleman (sic) on scooter with child of about 4 with helmet, shorts, t Shirt and flip flops, but with no gloves nor any other protection for vast amounts of young skin.

Dad was going down the wrong side of the road because of the seasonal traffic jams. He might have thought that he is the best rider in the world, but watching him, I doubted it. The risks on the road here in France are huge. Probably more than anywhere in Europe - too much exciteability and emotion. Shocked at the risk he was exposing the child to. He himself could go and fcuk off.

It is not unusual for someone who has had a trauma during an activity having a hard time performing that activity. If it is a risky activity like motorcycling or flying and aircraft it is sometimes not possible nor advisable to continue it. People can tend to freeze which can cause another wreck.

Most(not all) but most Harley riders you see are dressed in leathers, chaps, jackets, gloves and boots that would give them some protection if they were to go down. But then they are wearing non DOT lids(brain catchers) that would give their noggins no protection what so ever. Then you see the crotch rocket crowd dressed in shorts and a T shirt and sometimes not even a shirt but have the expensive full face helmets covering their heads. Not sure witch is worse $:-\$

Funny. I see a high number of guys riding Harleys in t-shirts and cuts and non-DOT helmets. However, they tend to ride more conservative than the squids riding above their level on sports bikes with t-shirts and back protectors.

I rode with no helmet for a long time, in fact the whole time I had my first K8 from new. That was after my "big one", I got broadsided by a green AMC Hornet Lic# GBC 008, funny the things you remember, cause that was the last thing I noticed before he hit me, there is a red curb in my honor there now cause I couldn't see around a box bed truck that was parked at the corner and was leaning way forward and pulling out slowly. I flew like a bird and landed hard. Lotsa lost skin, a cracked skull, and multiple contusions. I was 16 then and was riding my first bike, a 68 CL175, fixed the bike after I healed and continue to ride it without a helmet.......young and dumb. But that was a different world back then.

I have never met someone that has been riding long without at least 1 acsedent even just laying it down in a corner I have been hit by a car 3 times since I was 16 and I hit one car (stopped in a blind turn in a 55 zone to take a picture of wild life on the side of the road dispute the warnings to not stop in the road)

Then allow me to introduce myself. 35 years, over 440,000 miles and NEVER seen the pavement except with the soles of my feet. Nor a ticket.

There's one in (and probably others) in every bunch.

Here in co only riders under 17 have to have a helmet but I have goten a eye protection ticket sitting at a light wih my visor open

I like fly helmets personally. HJC too.

Currently using a handmedown hjc cl-max helmet and while its a comfy fit, I get lots of wind noise through the seams of the chinbar (modular) and the old visor rubber.

Wish I could get one of them fancy new anti-fog visors. Or at least try one out. I have the damndest luck finding any eye shield that I can't fog up.

lots of speeding tickets, lots of crashes, all caused by me, myself, and I, just out there pushing limits...have not managed to hit that large, heavy, immobile object that will take my life away yet...so yeah, god damn #$%*ing right, wear the best helmet I can afford and ride home each time...god willing, if gods there be...

Except the indisputable facts are helmets save lives. Learning to ride properly is a must, but proper protective gear should never be overlooked. Luck and skill can not replace safety gear, because once you come off the bike, it's just you and the asphalt.
