H4 Option
« on: October 15, 2015, 08:53:56 AM »
Had an old H4 headlight assembly off an 80' Honda Goldwing GL 1100 and decided to see if it fit my 74' CB 750 K4 headlight shell. Fit perfectly, just used the CB's headlight rings. Now I have an H4 replaceable bulb on my bike and like the results. Even though the H4 bulb was rated at 60/55W, I purchased a 45W bulb just in case the higher wattage bulb was too much for the stock wiring harness.

The 60/55w will be OK in the power budget on your K4. Over a long time period, if your K4 has the START button that also kills the headlight, it will melt the START button and render it useless. If that's the case, maybe think about installing one of my "Start Button Saver" relay kits (or make one yourself) to preserve the START button.

Many of the K4-K5 bikes have the OFF-ON switch on the right side handlebar. This switch will support the 60/55W H4 bulb OK. I like 'overkill', though: I use a small automotive relay inside the headlight, switched by that OFF-ON switch, to power all the lighting, anyway. That makes the switches last MUCH longer.

I have your "in the bucket dual relay" and love it for peace of mind and brighter light. Love to hear the "click" when I switch on the lights and toggle the beam.

My CB750 K6-76 was delivered with H4 from the beginning. Almost 100.000kms always on (law here) without any electrical issues except replacing bulb when needed and shorted wiring under handle bar when I re-routed cabling a little bit too quick...not inside handle bar anymore.

I installed relays last year after got the ideas here when the aftermarket ignition switch might be too weak.
1 relay for ignition 12V so ign switch just control the relay.
2 relays for headlight, LO, HI. Plus an additional relay for parking light that need to be off when LO is on.
Switches on handle bar look too cheap. (Yes, I know the OEM switches did never melt)

I installed new at last restore.
K6 has off-parking -head light

1 relay for horn. (dual snail horn did not work direct on std wiring)

I found these relays on an old VW fuse panel, they are smaller than the typical automotive relay:

I love it when parts come together.

The cheap relays I use are a little bit smaller than the Bosch type from the 70-80's.
Maybe these are OK?

I might order this model as replacement when it might be of better quality

EDIT: Ordered 3 of these stamped Portugal

Some genuine Tyco/TE are made in China ...Ok or not?
