I did a search about MTC rods but really didn't see the information I was looking for in each of the topics. So... i'm going to ask my question in this thread. I had a parts motor sitting in the shop i acquired from a friend. The head was off but the crank and rods were still in place. I remembered the engine had aluminum rods so i split the cases to take a closer look. Yeap, MTC aluminum rods.

Now my question to the group; whats the consensus on installing a used set of MTC rods?? Did they hold up well? I'm asking about your own personal experience mainly if you have used these rods.

I also noticed the crank had the name of "Bookworm" stamped into one of the throws. Anyone hear this name before?? PErhaps a crank builder or maybe this was the customer's way of marking his parts??? Comments please. Pics below of the rods and crank.

Frank, I sold a set like this, they also made steel  ones like in turbo bike. I didn't use them, came in Pena deal, Bill

Thanks Bill.

Can anyone who's run these rods chime in on reliability at least from the prospective of when the were used back in the day?? Anyone know of failures not related to lack of proper bearing and crank maintenance??? Lets exclude nitro use - lol.

Big Jay at APE has said some very positive things about these rods here on the forum.  I'd ask him directly.  I think he might have been a distributor for MTC rods back in the day.

George, thanks for the info. While my mind says it would be nice to use new carillos, my pocket says use what you have on hand. I'm going to build another engine over the winter from various parts I have laying around. The goal is to build another bike as cheaply as possible to bring along as an extra in case a forum member wants to race but hasn't gotten their own bike ready yet. It'll also be a backup bike for me. Not going to spend a ton of money on it since I'll be transporting it on the back of the truck and not inside my enclosed trailer. Not shooting for a 10 second bike either but will concentrate on ease of ride ability and reliability. Its not going to be a Billy Bling,bling bike either. Lol. Oh yeah, I will graciously accept parts donations as well, hi po preferred

Those were very nice rods for aluminum rods. If the big ends are still round, run them.

Question for anyone that's dealt with these rods, is it feasible to bore the small end to accept a 17mm wrist pin?? I'm toying with the idea of using 72-73mm  KZ pistons to better match the chamber of the F head since the largest piston I've found available today is 70mm. Of course I know i'll have to deal with chamber matching and consider deck height but the main issue here is the KZ pistons use 17mm pins. The MTC rods seem to have enough material to open up the hole a bit larger.

Yes, I do know the CB1000 and CB1100F rods are 17mm and are an option. The problem is they are hard to find and I have the MTC rods on hand. While I hate to modify a perfectly good set of obsolete rods, the good thing is I can always have a bushing installed to bring the MTC's back to 15mm.

You  interested in a set of 73's? They'd be 10.5 to 1 though.  At least that's what I think. Can post pics tomorrow.  Those MTC's  could probably go to 17, but you'd have a stronger pin and maybe a weaker rod?

Thanks for the offer on the pistons. Are they for a F model or K head?? Looking for a piston to match the later F chamber in 72 or 73mm. I've got a new set of Arias 73mm pistons for a K head. I've developed a preference for the F head and am trying to come up with an option for pistons and the KZ pistons are something i can get my hands on easily. If this doesn't pan out, I'll likely go with a K head and the Arias 73mm pistons or pursue the route Bear and the guys down under use with the VFR pistons.

Dynoman makes custom pistons, make the domes to fit your head and desired compression ratio and will do coatings and any other special machining you want.  I am talking with him about doing some stroker pistons for this long stroke crank I got.

My 1124cc dragbike has MTC's in it, the PO passed away. I never got to talk to him about it. He went fast, he claimed he was .02 off the record. I wish I knew what ET that was.

for what it is worth,my old nortons had alloy rods,750,850,and if the small end of the rod was out of spec ,bushing them was not recommended,you would have the increase in diameter of the pin,plus the thickness of the bushing,and then would have to be pinned in place to maintain the oil hole,I know the mtcs are big rods but I don't know if I would want to punch holes in them,just my thought.bill

It appears that the MTC rods might have a little more meat on the pin end compared to the RC Golden Rod.  Boring the MTC rod out to 17mm might leave a comparable amount of material around the pin as the RC rods has (.25 BTW).
