interchangability of 1973 cb 750 parts
« on: November 01, 2006, 06:06:13 PM »
i am rather new to the cb world and i am building a 73 cb 750 and i was just wondering how easily parts can be interchanged throughout the years. Is there certain years that the cb had no changes?
what years of cb's will work with a 73 750?

Thanks
Marc

Welcome Nipper - you can go to this commercial site  http://www.crotchrocket.com/default.asp , and check out the parts fiche. Pictures and numbers for every part on your bike. Change the settings to compare with other models and years.  A little time consuming, but you will know for sure.

It seems to be a little known resource that Service Honda has the Honda Parts System available online:
Service Honda Interactive Parts Application

It's not fiche.  As far as I can tell, it's the same MS Windows application that the Honda dealers use.  You must use Internet Explorer, and you have to enable ActiveX for that site.  I loathe Internet Explorer, and hate the idea of ActiveX even more; however, the application is worth it.

Once you've connected, start by clicking on the "book" button on the upper left, and that'll get you started on opening a parts catalog for a specific year/model.  Then, you can go through the parts diagrams and parts list to find what you want.

Now, comes coolness.  After picking the part you want, click on the button above that has a paint brush and a question mark, "Where Used."    A dialog will be displayed, and if the part is used in different years, it'll show, "Found in n Catalogs."  Click on "OK," and you get to see what years/models use the same parts.  There's lots of other stuff you can do, and lots of ways to do it, but that's a quick way to figure out what years/models a part will fit.

I printed the entire service honda catalog on my cb750 K5... pretty cool to have every part number for every part on my bike. (the local dealership is always shocked when I have a correct PN for a 31 year old bike.  I find sevice.honda has almost exactly the same price as my dealership usually quotes.  Although sometimes the local guys give some really high numbers and then I go to service.honda

Will the Honda site tell you if the parts are still available, or do they play the game of having you order it and then tell you after the fact?

*EDIT*- I was thinking the Honda Direct site, never mind. :P

Nope.  It won't tell you.  In fact, it seems that if you add parts to your order, from within the application, it doesn't keep them there when you exit.  That is, if you want to order the parts, you need to write down the part numbers, exit the application, and then enter them into the Service Honda Order Page.  Their order page is not reliable with regard to actual availability.

How did you print it? I have never been able to print out of that without a screen capture or something.

I have printed from the crotchrocket.com site though.

I did just that, captured each screen... It was a little time consuming.... 1hr maybe?  It wasn't to bad though I just used alot of keybord shortcuts on my mac and pasted them into photoshop.
