cb650 electrical upgrades
« on: October 19, 2015, 03:22:10 AM »
So I'm swapping out the cb500 motor for a cb650 motor in my bike. Uns good and is black saves me time painting it. I have no electrical for it though. Should I just go with stock electrical parts or are there better aftermarket electrical parts for them?

Not to many aftermarket parts for the 650.  Make sure the charging sys is working. I carry a extra igniter and pickup and regulator on long trips. Clean all the connections.    Of the 35 years riding several bikes I only had one igniter fail and only when hot.

The CB650 has it's own (two) CDI boxes -- and is not compatible to aftermarket Pamco, Dyna or other electronic ignition units.  These are the igniter boxes cb650 was referring to.  You can get replacement aftermarket units from Rick's: http://ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/part/15-101/ODBIb25DQjY1MA==

I have not seen aftermarket reproduction wire harness available.  If your harness is in bad shape, you can rewire the bike with a Motogadget system.

Pamco has a setup for the 650 engine.  Check out info here:

Thx guys. I have no harness for the 650 motor but I still have the 500 one I took out. Looks like it will work with a bit of modification. Is this the one you guys are talking about?

I would send a PM to Pamco Pete.  That way he can confirm exactly what is needed. It looks like he is considering the ignition for the 650, but has not made one yet.  He may be able to modify your plate.

There is a ignition upgrade for the Cb650 but it is a diy deal I will see if my buddy can explain it to me but he has a much hotter spark as fore the rest of it get a wire rack and some split loom find a wiring diagram and get to work up read your fuse block, reg and rectifier use the same starter solenoid we left you are at it add a relay to take load off the ignition switch and upgrade to a electronic turn signal flasher then you can run led lights and take load off the system
