Topic: How to remove Kreem tank liner

Hello guys, just wondering if anyone has used Kreem tank liner in a tank and then its come away from the tank or not adhered. Its not for my CB750 but another bike tank (old bsa). The Kreem tank liner was used but some of it has peeled away inside. Just dont know if it will keep coming away or if should try and remove it if possible or third option to just get another tank. Not sure if kreme was ethanol fuel safe or that causes failure.  Acetone can strip a kreme liner. Remove petcock of course.

Acetone will get at it, and your paint; so be careful with it. MEK will do a better job than Acetone. You'll need to soak the liner out and to get the underside completely cleaned, you may need to completely fill the tank, or at a minimum position the tank in many different orientations to let the chems remain in contact until completely dissolved.

Thanks guys. Stupid question but is there an average time it take to strip the liners with the acetone and do I need to Nutrilise it with something afterwards? Also what is MEK? Is that American terminology for something?

After the Acetone, you don't need to neutralize it as the Acetone will evaporate. But you might need to treat the metal with phosphoric to inhibit rust, or prep the interior if you plan to re-line it.

MEK is 100% pure Acetone (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) and may not be available in Oz. It can be pretty nasty stuff as it will dissolve 2-part epoxies. Its still on the shelf here in the States, though a slightly diluted formulation from the good old stuff we used to have-

Be warned. Use a respirator and keep it out of your attached garage open. Works great but NASTY. I only buy it in quarts because I dont even like having the stuff around when I dont need to use it. Most home improvement stores stock it.

I've never seen MEK in the local hardware store and have always bought Acetone. Is the Acetone I get a diluted MEK then, never read the can?

MEK will attack the paint just as easily as Acetone will, actually easier.

I use MEK on my Por-15 lined tank(according to the receipt) from what I read on this board and it didn't do jack. Didn't even soften it...first time I got bad info here. Hopefully it will work better with Kreem lined.

I have been removing a liner for SohRon for many weeks now. It was double-lined with Caswell (2-part epoxy). Acetone didn't even budge it. MEK (the good stuff I buy at a commercial painting store) is the only thing that pulled the bulk of it out. I have also alternated to Methyl Chloride in a gel/semi-solid and used it to get more. Then back to MEK. I've not removed a POR-15 liner, but I would not expect it to be any different. It does take a while (3-5 days) for the MEK to perform its magic on these epoxy liners. Karen is much, much easier to remove in my experience.

I've had very good results with Acetone on RedKote for some reason, perhaps that it never seem to fully harden?
