Frozen Oil Filter Bolt

Well... I have another issue with the 1976 CB550F I recently bought.  The bolt that holds the Oil Filter assembly together is frozen and impossible to remove.  Especially since I rounded the bolt head trying to remove it.

I tried heating the bolt... I tried using a large ViseGrip pliers and I also tried using a cold chisel and a hammer to turn the nut... with no luck.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this?  I did see a YouTube video of someone that welded another nut on top of the bolt and then used an impact wrench.

welding the nut works very well. you can dremel a slot into the bolt head and try a large screwdriver, but...

Centerpunch the remaining nub and drill it out in ever increasing amounts until the head falls off. Then you can pull the cover off. Then you can turn the remaining bolt out. Usually it comes easily because the sticture often occurs between the bottom of the head of the bolt and the cover, not so much the threads themselves.

I just might try drilling the bolt until it allows the case to slip off.  I was thinking along those lines but thought it might be too extreme!  Looking at the OEM's part diagram confirms that it all should come apart once the bolt head is removed.

There was a picture, somebody took sawzall to it - sliced across the oil filter housing and the bolt - and used vicegrips to get the bolt out afterwards.

Makes some sense, the head of the bolt is usually stuck - as McRider mentioned - and there is plenty of decent oil filter housings available on ebay and other places.

You can take a cheap smaller sized socket. Pound it onto the rounded part.

Well .... I got it off. 

I tried the heat, Hammer and Chisel one more time and it started to turn.  A little more heat, more hammering and it came off.

I ordered a new Oil Bolt assembly... $54.00...Yikes!!

Unless you need the originality an after market bolt with a 17mm head is a good swap.

Yeah... I was too quick to buy the OEM part from a Honda Dealer ($54).  I found the same part on the '4 into 1' parts website for $13.00.

The 4 into 1 website (www.4into1.com) has some very nice prices on CB550 parts... I will keep this in mind as I go through the build.
