Frame tube modification - pictures needed!
« on: October 23, 2015, 06:45:56 AM »
Hi everyone,

I've searched the forum a lot, but I could not find any picture of a very nice frame modification I've saw a couple of year ago here.
The two straight tubes from the steering head, on top of the engine, were partially removed, and substituted with two curved tubes so it was possible to remove the head with the engine still in place.

I'm seriously thinking to do such modification... any suggestion? Do you think frame stiffness will be affected too much?

Thanks in advance for any help provided!

Sounds like your are describing an automatic frame. They have the curved top rails.

If you do that you probably need to clearance the gas tank, or use the A Tank.
I can. Tell you a weldless kit , is a quick easy way to be able to remove the topend. Only about 2 hrs to install.

Mhhh I rather not pick that option, I don't want to add weight!

No one has a pic of an hondamatic frame?

Weldless weighs about 450 grams... Weld in kits around 3.5 lbs..

The Auto frame has some extra brackets and mounts, its probably heavier than the K and F frames.

I used the old original weld in kit, they are heavy. I did counter bore the slugs part way through just to lighten them a little.

Hi , I tried to knock up a pair of bent tubes , but no matter how I did it I experienced clearance problems with the dummy glass fibre fuel tank I used . So I went with straight tubes .

Thanks  ;). I thought about doing away with the side rails altogether, but decided against it,as I'm a little too long in the tooth for those sort of shenanigans now ;D ;D.
