Not Sure if these Carbs are Keihin 022A?
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:45:15 am »
Hi,

I jumped on this forum some time ago and got some good feedback about my PD46C that I rebuilt.  I eventually want to run some pod filters and met someone online who has his own awesome looking CB550 who advised not too particularly with a NON OEM exhaust as they run real lean and are real difficult to tune.  The advice was to get 022A if I want to run the pod filters which I do as I really love the look.  I have now come across a set of carbs online but the seller does not know what model the carbs he has he is selling... They look like the 022A but was hoping someone can advice me as it could be an opportunity for me to purchase them and rebuild them.

Thx..

They are the same as mine looks wise that I have on my cb500 but I'm also unsure as I can't find the code / ref / model stamp on them either!!

I have a cb500 k1 frame but a k2 engine number if this made any difference.  I presume the PO swapped the engine out and I also believe/expect the carbs to be the same on k1 and k2 models.

the model number of the carbs is stamped on the side of #1 and #4 on the outside, intake manifold side of the body. I'd ask to see a picture with the bowls off and look at the float posts. That is where the damage is most critical (before you buy).

Those look like 069A's that are on my 76 550F. Regardless I agree with calj737, get a look under the float bowls before purchasing any older carbs.

All the 500 and 550s to 1976 and the 77 550F had the same carb bodies, hard to tell from the outside except the stamp as calj says. It's the set up on the inside that's important. Jet size, needle clip position, etc. Frankly you will have trouble with any pods on any of these carbs if you want the bike to run dependably.

I would say the richest running carbs will be the 550K model 022A set up.

thanks for your input everyone...  I have since spoken to the seller via email and he has stated they are the 22A carbs..  I did mention to him I want to see under the float bowls and in particularly the float posts like calj and others suggested..  The seller has assured me there is no corrosion in the carbs and did not forward any photos...  Hhhmmmmm!! might take a punt... decisions!!!

Yeah Duanob,    Kenzo's 069A look identical to the other ones which he has confirmed to be 22A...

What would be the main difference inside the card?  Is it mainly size of jets??

You also mention that if I want the bike to run dependably...  What would be your definition of dependability v's non dependability...   just so i understand what I am in for...  Thanks so much..

If the seller can't be bothered to show you the inside of the bowl cavity, then I wouldn't be bothered giving him any of your money.  It is a very warranted and relevant question.  Most people that get burned buying carbs--this is the reason.  They take a shot.

When sellers don't disclose things like this, they are basically flashing a sign in your face saying "I AM HIDING SOMETHING!"

If those rebuilt by Haris are for sale, buy them directly. You are thus guaranteed of correct, perfect carbs.

Hi Harisuluv,

so the hunt continues for the elusive 022A's...  I am waiting on another seller to tell me if he has the 022A's but at this point it seems like it is missing the tube set.

Are these hard to find as spares?  I have looked but have not found a place that stocks them.

Thx!!!

Yeah it's not really made.  If you are still looking for a set I have a few good ones.  I'd ask for $160 + shipping ($15) for a good core that is complete.

Don't forget that if you buy a set from anybody, and you put PODs on tit will be a lot of trial and error to find the right set up to get them to run correctly. Running correctly to me means, starting easily, idling smoothly and and smooth acceleration and power through the entire RPM range. Success with PODs seems kind of rare with these carbs.

Harisuluv,

Sounds like it could be a great option.  Are these ones you rebuilt or do I still need to do something to them?  I do not mind having to do something.

I am in Australia,  have you shipped here before and would you know what that would cost?

Thanks!!

Hi Duanob,

everything you state makes perfect sense...  I love the look and I am sure I will find out exactly were I have compromised once I get it on the road...

They would just be a good core.  The ones you saw that I rebuilt that were sold would have started with a similar core.  You would still have to go rebuild them.  Shipping to Australia is around $80 if I remember correctly.
