$600 Cm450 find
« on: October 13, 2015, 08:14:46 AM »
Just picked up a 82 cm450c from down the street.  This is. To replace my girlfreinds cb750 that was to tall for her. It has gummed up carbs from sitting but I got it to run with starter fluid and will be ripping them down in the next cople of weeks.  Overall the bike is in good shape.  I will be swapping out the saddle bags and adding a windshield.  Who has ever remade a seat as thus one is trash.

Sadly I didn't have time to start working on it because I had class but I did get a new tool bag made up because the old one was geting sad

Make sure to check for compression. If you don't have a compression tool try to feel the difference in the heat exhaust each muffler produces with your hand behind it. See if you get any oily water condensation on your hand. That should be normal if the rings have not been replaced, and be sure not put your hand out too long. If you want to get really crafty cheapily you can borrow a friend's (or mom's) kitchen thermometer to use on the headers.

It seems to have compression I pulled 1 plug out at a time and put my finger over the hole and cranked it and it did good it is far lyrics low miles just neglected the po let it sit for a long time I got it to fire wih no starter fluid but I don't have the throttle hooked up  yet so I couldn't do much to baby it to keep it running.  I am going to swap oil plug for a new magnetic one and add a bit of seafoam to the oil and run it to clean the engine good befor draining but it has been raining since last Sunday here

Nice to hear you have compression. A magnetic oil plug is very clutch and I would say is a must for a top-end rebuild when any internals are replaced.

You said you used po, penetrating oil? did you fill each spark plug hole with 2-3 oz of it? Homemade stuff works the best from what I researched. I used a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. If you use any flammable kinds make sure to change the oil out before starting and kickstart it all out a half a dozen times.  If you are saving your plugs you could use matching threaded bolts so you don't get PO on your plugs. The bike will smoke and sputter for a bit, but it should shoot it all out after 5 min.

If you have to abandon your project for a while remember to winterize your carbs if they were rebuilt. I had stop working on my 350f for a while and I did not winterize my carbs after draining them. my new check valves and other new jets got lyme disease basically and were white and crusty after I finished my engine rebuild. I was told that a 50/50 WD40 and gas can last years sitting and the same with 2 stroke oil.

No penitrating oil he just let it sit bit everything was free nothing stuck, I am not winterizing it yet but I am talking to someone about using a stall in there garage to work in.  Over the winter I start the bikes every month and let them idle for a bit to get things moving.  The magnetic oil plug is just something I do on all my cars and bikes just like a inline filter on my gas line. I also just picked up new air and oil filters for the bike in my last order of filters for the fleet of bikes we have sitting here as both my bikes need changes

So not being familiar with the vb22 carbs I am having some trouble with tuning it is only running on the left cylinder untell I hit 5k when it takes off like a bat out of hell.  When I rebuilt the carb the slide seemed to stick on the right carb a bit would this caus the hesitation

Starting them in winter is good except for condensation in the exhaust. I did that on my new 73 cb500 and the pipes rotted off the second year.

The 750 isn't much of a runner in the cold so that is about all I can do for it but my yamaha gets the run out as it starts and runs in sub zero and wih the sidecar I can ride even in the snow

So turns out that the spark plug wires are rotted through causing bad and or iratic spark so I did idea to do what my buddy did on his cb650 and swap on a gm coil from a 2000 chevy caviar this will give me a hotter spark and I will be able to replace the wires I will be making a bracket and using a build your own wire kit to make the new custom wires for the bike
