Well I just painted myself into a corner.
« on: October 26, 2015, 03:40:03 PM »
Thought it would be nice to have some low rise supersport bars on my 550f.  Put my weight forward and down more than with the stock bars.

Anywho, the bars I got weren't pre-milled for the internal wiring of the left hand controls (not that I am a fan of internal wiring in the first place)

So I thought, no biggie, I'll just "mill" down the body of the LH control pod to accommodate that big mass of wiring.  AND BOY WAS I WRONG  :o

I can't seem to chop out enough material to make the thing fit well, I've got it close, but I really don't want to go much farther with the removal of material.  So I guess I'll be in the market for a suitable LH control pod.  turn sig, horn, hi/lo beam.  and clutch perch.

What products have ya'll adapted to your handlebar?

Just cut some more, no biggie. I loosened the wires the last time I did it and used a small hack saw. Simple, 15 min.

Error slightly on the side of too big. If the area you are working on is too small you will pinch the wires and potentially over time cause a short or cut wire. The wire harness should have slight movement. Also I believe that the 1977/78 CB550k had that relief built into the control. The harness was on the outside of the bars for those years.

You can get some shrinkwrap tape and reinforce the wire harness where it goes through the control body so it doesn't cut through over time. Then ziptie the harness to the bars. I put 400F bars on my 550F but I didn't like them, they were too short and I felt pulled too far forward.

Then ziptie the harness to the bars.

I typically ziptie the wires to the clutch cable on the left and the brake hose on the right.
Leaves the bars looking clean with no black zips...

I got the controls on today after a bit more cutting.
All in all, I'm satisfied with the bars.
