do I have these clubman bars on right?
« on: November 02, 2006, 01:26:09 PM »
Finally got the old bars off and the wiring out of them.  I plan on fabricating a new center console for all switches and idiot lights.  Just wanted to put the new bars on real quick to see how they looked.   I found that if I flip over and rotate the stock handle bar holder they will work as a upper clamp for the new bars.  I just need to cut off the extra length and grind them smooth and paint.   You can see it on the right side clamp in these pics.    Do I have these bars on in the correct oreintation?

here is a pick with the original bars.  So the new bars have moved forward above where the idiot light console used to be

Thx,
Doug

I don't think those are the stock handlebar clamps... looks like aftermarket risers to get more pullback maybe?  The clubmans look like they are mounted "correctly" (at least they're not upside down) You might have the same problem I did w/ clearance between controls and tank... Mine wouldn't quite make it and my tank has two lil' dents to show for it.  I changed to euro bars and am very happy. I might go to drag bars or adjustable clubmans sometime down the line but I'm pretty happy w/ how mine fits right now!

yeah, those definetely aren't stock clamps, those are pull-back clamps someone mounted. The stock clamp is just the indicator light housing (next to the tank in the picture.)

Thats it !
As CAFE75 said, the stock handlebar clamp IS the idiot lights/dashboard setup..
You got something special their bud !  ;D

Yep, Doug. If you want to eliminate the "idiot lights" you'll need a set of upper clamps from a '69 - '71.  Interesting though, if you flipped the "pullback" clamps around,  you could mount the idiot lights further forward. Of course, I don't know why you'd want to.....  ::) RR

hmmm oh boy something special.....just what I need.... ::)

Acutally I think the bars should work the way I have them in the pictures no?    I can mount a custom switch board above the clubman crossbar with tabs coming down that the bar lock bolts would go thru to hold it in place..........I "think " ??? ??? ???

Thx for the info,
Doug

Ah I can see now that the piece that holds the headlight on can be removed..... ;D   It is rusty anyway and looks like crap.  Now get to spend more money of aftermarket headlight ears.   ::)

I saw those pull back clamps on Ebay and wondered WTF? I guess if some real tall guy wanted to sit on the passenger portion of the seat and ride, it would work out OK.

Hey Doug-

I actually used my idiot panel as my switch panel, posted this pick in my other thread but I'll put it up here for convenience, I just removed the lights and covers (the little colored plastic bits just pop out) and drilled it for switches, then put a aluminum panel over the top to hide the old holes that didn't get used....I may end up getting rid of the panel altogether after I ditch the starter (since I run clip ons I don't need it really), if not I'll probably weld in a better coverplate for a cleaner look when I figure out what switched I need to keep.

Ok - here's what you need.  You can buy new handlebar clamps right from Honda if you want to save time (unless you know someone with them).  I paid $7 each for mine - I wanted nice new looking ones so I just bought them.

Second - headlight ears.  In my opinion the nicest aftermarket ears are the Tommaselli style ones.  You can get them cheap - $22 - from www.mikesxs.com which is a site that caters to the Yamaha xs650 crowd.  How I wish there was an equivalent site for Honda's.

You want the 35mm version, which is not often in stock but is now I think.  They're at the bottom of this page:

http://www.mikesxs.com/mikesxs-electrical.php?category_id=2.5

You can also get nice handlebars and particularly a nice chrome clamp if that's your style on this page:

http://www.mikesxs.com/mikesxs-chassis.php?category_id=1.4

Free shipping on $35+ orders too.  I'm not associated with the site, but they do offer some of the more reasonable prices and shipping around.  Those Tommaselli headlight ears sell for a LOT more at other places.

I'm pretty sure the chrome clamp will fit the Hondas, but don't take my word for it - get measurements.

Hey that is a great idea!

WOW!!! It is too bad they don't have a place like this for Honda. I like the look of those controls and the handle bar clamp. I will be looking back to this place.

Agreed...some very nice looking stuff.  I ordered a drag bar and some headlamp ears.  Not sure the clubmans are gonna do it for me.....maybe a little to far down....the drag bars looked like a good compromise and were not a lot of money................... Money money money.... :'(

I used to go there for my xs parts. my main concern with the tommaselli brackets are the lack of a good ground for the headlight through the headlight bolts

Grounds are pretty easy to come by in the headlight bucket, so I'm not too concerned about it.  I picked up a set of genuine Tommaselli brackets at my local shop that's closing down (bankrupt after 97 years).  The girl working at the receivership sale changed the pricetag for me from $45 to $20 and then I got 40% off that when I took it to the cash desk  ;D  $12 out the door!
