Rugby just blew my mind!
« on: October 31, 2015, 06:51:23 PM »
First off....I Am not a sports guy. I played soccer as a kid and always played defense. Never watched sports unless it was a big game....and then never really cared.

Today I saw New Zealand vs Australia. I was just passing by the TV on my way out the door, but then found myself standi g there. Hooked. Had to sit down and watch more. Absolutely captivating sport. So much power and control. Ref says "Release" and the pile of fighting dudes just pauses. Even when a player gets a penalty for a dangerous play, he takes it like a gentleman.

I am a new fan. Thank you rugby. When is the next game!!!!

Hooligan sport played by gentlemen. Was it a decent match to rewatch since I missed it?

Yeah, unfortunately SA only made it to third spot this time round. It's a real heavy contact  sport.

They say:
Soccer is played by gentlemen and watched by hooligans.
Rugby is played by hooligans and watched by gentlemen
Cricket is played by gentlemen and watched by gentlemen.

And:
In soccer every uninjured player will spend 90 minutes convincing the referee he's been injured
In rugby every injured player will spend the rest of the game trying to convince the ref that he's fine, just dandy.

The All Blacks are one of the finest Rugby teams on the planet.  If you like that you should see if you can find a Hurling match.  Greatest game ever invented.

The only hurling I know about is after I have quaffed one too many alcoholic beverages.
Nobody wins that game.

Joe, as a US guy that grew up playing soccer and baseball and watching football, I have to say rugby is the best sport I have ever played.  Picked it up on a whim in college and played in to my early 30's.  I retired two years ago (33) becuase the ole' body couldn't handle it anymore.  It combines all best parts of the big sports (smashing people, continous play, strong team dynamic, set pieces, etc.) and no matter your size, there is a spot for you.  I just wish i had found when I was younger.

I played it into my 30's also after picking it up in college.
Had the most fun playing it over any other sport by far.

They still do a haka before every game? Pretty damn intimidating.

They may have beaten us in the rugby but we're looking good in the cricket.

Cheers,

I've been playing since high school. I'm 31 now. It's way better than watching these overpaid crybabies that make up the NFL. Unfortunately there's not an enormous demand in the States and our team seldom provide their opponent with a decent match.

Definitely my favorite sport by a long shot.

Jesus I just heard or read that Jonah Lomu is gone at 40 from a kidney disease that's terrible, now there was someone you'd think that would go for ever I saw him a couple of times on tv and was he something else.

Holy frickin' crap.
Lomu was a tank with jets, so sad to hear he died fairly young.

Hurling is an incredible game - seriously, the skill and athleticism is amazing. Rugby is a mans game, no doubt.

Uh, NO.

That's why when players retire from League they go play Union for a pension. ;)

Sorry Moorey but that was 20 years ago maybe.
Since Rugby Union went professional the game is faster and more entertaining. Rugby League is very structured with a bash up it for 5 tackles and then kick approach. In Rugby Union the game can ebb  and flow from one end to the other with multiple possessions from either side - much more entertaining especially if NZ teams are involved (I admit that UK Rugby can be a bit boring).
Rugby is played professionally in a lot of countries now and is the fastest growing sport in the USA. Look out when they get really good !
Rugby League only has three major countries and it's always a case of who plays Australia in the final - NZ or England.
Mind you, I'm biased because I'm a Kiwi and we are the World Champions after all !

Oh, I wasn't arguing with the fitness aspect. Just which was the better game to watch. League bores the crap out of me, not much strategy to it IMO. Just barge the ball up and keep toeing. If I want a faster game I just watch sevens.
