Drive chain adjustment

Hi.  I need to adjust the drive chain on my 76 CB750.  First question-what size is the rear axle nut?  I'm going to guess 22 mm.  Second question-how do I get a socket on that nut?  Do I have to loosten the exhaust & get an extension through the two pipes (original 4-4 exhaust)?  Thanks!

I use a 10 inch Cresant Wrench, always have. As for the size, It's like a chevy with the original 1967 motor, maybe/maybe not original. A proper MM open end wrench will work, get a caliper and measure it.

I always use an adjustable wrench (what's the correct name in english). Though they are not recommended for small nuts as they can round them, for such a big nut it's almost impossible to round it, and it normally is not too tight. You don't need to remove the pipes that way.

Hi Raul, in English a wrench is a Spanner. Hence 'Adjustable Spanner'.

I use the original Honda tool (I have collected a few of these over the years).  It is a hex spanner but is thin enough to fit between the swing arm and the exhaust. It also comes with a slip-on extender to offer more leverage.

I have always used a parachute ripcord (sp?) clip in place of a split pin. My mate worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) Thurliegh Bedfordshire in the 70s and brought me home a couple. I've still got them.  Pics when I get home.

So if you're using an adjustable wrench, you're not too worried about the specified torque when you tighten the nut back up, right?  Thanks!

In 30 years riding these bikes, I've never torqued the rear axle.

Just hand tight and then 1/4 turn (just like wheel nuts on a car)

I was at a hardware store the other day to get large wrenches for just this purpose.  Luckily they let me go out side with a 22 and 24mm wrenches to make sure they fit.  Low and behold, one side had a 22mm nut, and the other a 24mm nut, when you check the size, make sure you check both sides..

Maybe he meant the -real- English. In American, its an adjustable wrench. ;D

...the only thing I torque on my 750 is the cam & head bolts   ;D
